Brazil Could Become the “Saudi Arabia of SAF”: Airbus CEO Highlights the Country’s Potential to Lead Global Production and Export of Sustainable Fuel, Consolidating Its Position in the Global Market.
The sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) landscape is still in its early stages, but the projections for the future are impressive. According to Airbus CEO in Brazil, Gilberto Peralta, the country has the potential to become a global leader in SAF production, possibly reaching 50 billion tons in the coming years. This estimate positions Brazil as the future “Saudi Arabia of SAF”, highlighting its capacity to dominate the global market for sustainable fuel and attracting major investments.
Brazil Will Be the “Saudi Arabia of SAF”, According to Airbus CEO
The forecast was made during participation in the Agriculture Investment Conference, hosted by UBS bank on September 23, in São Paulo. Soon, the Airbus CEO expects to have more data to support his optimism. This is because the European company, the largest aircraft manufacturer in the world, is producing a study in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) which, as he revealed, will show that the country has the potential to be the largest producer of sustainable aviation fuel in the world.
In about ten years, both Brazil and the United States will produce around 50 billion liters annually each. The difference, according to the Airbus CEO, is that the United States consumes 120 billion liters of fuel per year, while Brazil consumes 8 billion.

According to Peralta, the US will have to import, and Brazil can take advantage of this to become the “Saudi Arabia of SAF”. This optimistic view for sustainable fuel necessarily involves the production side. Today, Brazil is witnessing different movements from various players in the biofuels sector.
What Could Hinder Brazil from Becoming the “Saudi Arabia of SAF”?
Across various fronts of the chain of sustainable fuel, there is, however, a consensus about a possible barrier to the country’s advancement: for the market to take off and Brazil to assume the projected leadership, not only investment is necessary, but also a functional regulatory framework.
According to Be8 CEO, Erasmo Batistella, during the UBS event, the perception of the productive sector is that the SAF market requires the formulation of appropriate public policies to create an investment-friendly environment in Brazil. Be8 is one of the largest national biodiesel producers.
The CEO of Airbus and Be8 participated in the same panel at the Swiss bank’s event, and together, they celebrated the approval of the Future Fuel Bill by Congress at the beginning of the month. According to the Airbus executive, President Lula is expected to sign the project next week.
The Be8 executive points out that the project should have been approved at least two years ago, considering that the requirement for the use of sustainable fuel in aircraft tanks is scheduled for 2027.
Understand Brazil’s Potential to Produce Sustainable Fuel
The Airbus CEO believes that no other country has better qualities to lead the SAF market than Brazil. Peralta states that no other country has made a fuel switch, and we have already made two.
First with ethanol and then with agricultural aviation, which today is almost entirely powered by ethanol. We in Brazil already have the experience, while the US and Europe have moved to electric cars.
Moreover, he stated that only Brazil has all eight production routes for sustainable fuel. Among the possible feedstocks are sugarcane or corn ethanol, agricultural and forestry residues, vegetable oils, cooking oil, and beef tallow.
