With Plug-In Hybrid Mechanics, the BYD King Promises Efficiency and Autonomy, Challenging the Corolla’s Leadership in the Brazilian Mid-Sedan Market
In July, the Brazilian mid-sedan market will have a new heavyweight competitor: the BYD King, also known as Destroyer 05 in China. With plug-in hybrid mechanics and the ambition to rival the iconic Toyota Corolla, the King vehicle arrives in Brazil with promises of efficiency and performance, according to the website Quatro Rodas.

In Brazil, the hybrid King shares the mechanics of the Song Plus, but with some differences. With a slightly weaker electric motor, generating 179 hp and 31.9 kgfm, the King delivers a total of 224 hp. The battery is also smaller, with 8.3 kWh of capacity and 46 km of electric autonomy.
Inside, the King features a stylish finish, with soft-touch materials on the upper parts of the dashboard and doors. The highlight is the 15.6” rotating screen and the 8.8” instrument cluster. Unlike the Song Plus, the hybrid King has a rotary gear selector and hard plastic finish on the console.
The Competition of the New Hybrid with the Toyota Corolla
In the Brazilian market, the main competitor of the King will be the Toyota Corolla, which currently dominates almost alone the mid-hybrid sedan segment. With a starting price of R$ 187,790, the Corolla vehicle is known for its efficiency as a mild hybrid, offering 122 hp of power.
The price of the BYD King will be a determining factor for its success in the Brazilian market. With a more powerful and interesting mechanics in comparison to the Corolla, the King has the potential to attract consumers who value not only efficiency but also the performance of a hybrid vehicle. The competition between these two vehicles promises to be fierce, with each trying to carve out its space among consumers looking for a mid-hybrid sedan.
