Chevrolet Hatch Arrives in the 2026 Lineup with Minor Changes, Priced at R$ 100 Thousand for the Base Version and Promising Low Consumption, but With Limited Performance and Missing Comfort Features.
The 2026 Chevrolet Onix arrives in the Brazilian market with minor visual changes, a new oil-coated belt, and a 1.0 aspirated engine of up to 82 hp.
Despite good fuel consumption — which can reach 19.7 km/l on the highway with gasoline —, what stands out the most is the price: the base version costs R$ 100 thousand, more than double the R$ 48 thousand charged in 2019.
The information was presented by journalist André Schaun in a video published on the Autoesporte channel this Sunday (07).

He compared the evolution of prices and highlighted that, while the accumulated inflation in the period was about 35%, the price of the hatch increased by 106%.
The Surge in Onix Prices
According to Schaun, the increase is not only explained by the appreciation of the currency.
The 2020 pandemic, the semiconductor crisis, the rising cost of inputs like steel and aluminum, along with the devaluation of the real, directly impacted the automotive sector.

He also recalled that, during the same period, automakers had to invest in safety and technologies to reduce emissions.
“This set of factors caused the price of the new car to soar,” he noted in the video. Currently, the cheapest model in the country starts at approximately R$ 80 thousand.
Basic Version Without a Name
According to the journalist, the entry-level configuration is identified only as Onix 1.0 MT, equipped with an aspirated engine of up to 82 hp and a six-speed manual transmission.
Visually, almost nothing has changed: slightly larger grille, halogen headlights, and absence of LED taillights.
He also emphasized that the 15-inch wheels are, in fact, well-crafted hubcaps.
The external dimensions remain the same: 4.19 meters in length and 2.55 m wheelbase.
External Details and 100-Year Special Series
The video shows that the side received a glossy black trim with texture, and the rear maintained the simple design, without version branding.
Only the special series “100 Years GM” features a sticker alluding to the date. This configuration also uses a 1.0 aspirated engine and will have limited production.
Equipment and Interior Space

When analyzing the interior, Schaun pointed out that the finish is simple, with predominance of plastics.
Nevertheless, the entry-level version offers keyless entry, push-button start, air conditioning, electric mirrors, and a multimedia center with an 8-inch screen, compatible with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
The rear seat maintains the well-known dimensions, accommodating adults in a limited way.
The journalist commented that, even in a car costing R$ 100 thousand, comfort features are missing, such as soft armrest, air conditioning vents, or additional USB ports.
Onix 2026 Consumption as the Main Attraction
During the test, Schaun drove the hatch on a highway and highlighted that the strong point is its fuel consumption.
“It achieved up to 19.7 km/l with gasoline, which means over 800 km of range with the 44-liter tank,” he reported.
In the city, the average recorded was 13.9 km/l. Despite the good yield, the performance does not impress.
The acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h took 14.3 seconds, a result deemed only adequate for the category.
New Oil-Coated Belt from Chevrolet

Another highlight of the 2026 lineup is the update of the timing belt, which now has a more resistant chemical formulation.
According to the journalist, General Motors reported that the change aims to reduce premature wear problems caused by using oil outside the specification.
“According to the manufacturer, the belt replacement is still scheduled every 240 thousand km, provided that the service intervals are followed,” Schaun explained.
Comfort and Driveability in Everyday Use
In the video, he commented that the six-speed manual transmission helps to lower engine RPM at cruising speeds, making the ride smoother.
The acoustic insulation is only reasonable, and wind noise is noticeable at higher speeds.
The suspension, in turn, is considered firm, similar to Volkswagen models, which ensures stability but transmits more road imperfections.
Onix’s Market Share in Brazil
The Onix was once the absolute sales leader in Brazil for several years but has recently lost ground to hatches like Hyundai HB20 and Volkswagen Polo, as well as to the rise of compact SUVs.
As André Schaun pointed out, the model is still among the best-selling, but without the same dominance as before.
One of the reasons was the halt in GM’s production during the pandemic, which impacted both supply and project updates.
Is It Worth Buying the 2026 Onix?
In closing, the journalist pondered that discussing an entry-level hatch costing R$ 100 thousand is challenging in the current scenario.
He emphasized that the Onix offers six airbags, traction and stability controls, and low fuel consumption, but still lacks basic items, such as parking sensors and a rearview camera.
Schaun also noted that the model benefits from tax incentives that reduce the IPI. If the program ends, the price could rise even more.
Given this, he questions whether the cost is justified or if, for the same amount, it would be more advantageous to look for better-equipped used options. What do you think: is the basic Chevrolet Onix 2026 really worth R$ 100 thousand?
