Sedans are losing ground in the national market, giving way to SUVs. However, this trend is not as pronounced in other countries. In China, for example, the best-selling car of the year is a sedan, the BYD Qin. In Brazil, the Chevrolet Onix Plus leads the segment, standing out as the last great example among three-volume cars (hood, cabin, and trunk). According to the numbers from Fenabrave, the Chevrolet Onix Plus ‘humiliated’ the competition in the first half of the year. The Onix sedan achieved 29.9 thousand sales. There was a good battle for second place between the Fiat Cronos (16.8 thousand) and the Toyota Corolla (16.5 thousand).
The Cronos and the Toyota Corolla have different stories. While the Fiat model is the only sedan of reasonable volume coming from Argentina, imported without a tariff, the Toyota model is the only one that has hybrid versions.

In the battle for fourth place, the Volkswagen Virtus managed to record 900 more registrations than the Hyundai HB20s, both around 14 thousand sales (almost 15 thousand for the VW sedan). Between sixth and ninth places, there is a range of Japanese sedans, namely the Toyota Yaris, Nissan Versa, Honda City, and Nissan Sentra.
The Toyota and Honda models are produced in Brazil. The two Nissan models come to market through imports from Mexico, without a tariff. However, sales are quite different, with a significant advantage for the Yaris and reduced volume for the Sentra.
BYD Joins The List Of Best-Selling Sedans In Brazil
Of the 10 best-selling sedans, 7 are compact and 3 are medium (Corolla, Sentra, and Seal). Even though the Chevrolet Onix Plus is the leader, the presence of the BYD SEAL in the top 10 ranking is essential, as it is the only electric car on the list.
Launched in August of last year, the sedan-coupe caused a stir with a competitive price and promising to challenge entry-level versions of premium German combustion sedans, and it seems to have worked, as it trails only the Toyota Corolla and Nissan Sentra, with 1,910 units registered from January to May.
With 531 hp, naturally, the Seal raises high expectations. Indeed, it accelerates quickly, as the specifications suggest, but the delivery is quite progressive. The model goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.0 seconds, a sports car figure, but slightly below the official 3.8 seconds indicated, including on the trunk lid.
