China Is About to Make a Giant Leap in Naval Military Standing with the Development of China’s Largest Aircraft Carrier, the Type 004. Satellite Images and Recent Reports Indicate That the Construction of This Nuclear-Powered Colossus Is Already Underway at the Dalian Shipyard. But What Makes This Aircraft Carrier a Milestone for the Chinese Navy?

The Type 004 is not just another aircraft carrier in China’s growing fleet. With a displacement estimated between 110,000 and 120,000 tons, it may even surpass the USS Gerald R. Ford, the pride of the U.S. Navy. Its length of 330 meters and width of 83 meters make it a true giant of the seas.

The most important differentiator, however, lies in its propulsion. For the first time, China will adopt a nuclear system to power an aircraft carrier. Developed by the China National Nuclear Corporation (NPIC), this reactor will allow the Type 004 to operate for decades without needing to refuel. This means greater operational autonomy, longer voyages, and a significant increase in China’s power projection capabilities in the Indo-Pacific and beyond.

Observed Structures and Indicators of the Aircraft Carrier’s Construction

The Type 004 is expected to be the largest aircraft carrier in China and possibly the largest in the world in terms of displacement. Estimates point to 110,000 to 120,000 tons, surpassing the USS Gerald R. Ford, which is currently the largest operational aircraft carrier at around 100,000 tons.

However, in terms of length, both will be similar, at about 330 meters. The main difference is in width, where the Type 004 may be slightly larger, which could influence its aircraft transport capacity and deck infrastructure.

Reports indicate that the Dalian shipyard already has concrete evidence of the advancement of the Type 004. Structures resembling C3 and C4 catapults have been identified on site, suggesting tests related to the new aircraft launch system. A mock-up of the J-15 fighter has been spotted, reinforcing the hypothesis that the project is taking shape.

Another important detail is the presence of a deck section with tracks for catapults, suggesting that China may be testing or even constructing modules of the Type 004. There are still doubts as to whether these pieces are part of an early construction stage or merely test platforms, but the fact is that something significant is happening at Chinese shipyards.

Cutting-Edge Technology Aboard the Type 004

The technology of China’s largest aircraft carrier will be state-of-the-art. One of the highlights is the use of EMALS (Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System), an electromagnetic catapult system that will allow the launch of heavier and more efficient aircraft.

The Type 004 will feature a diverse array of aircraft, including:

  • J-15T (naval version of the J-15 fighter, optimized for catapult operations)
  • J-35 (fifth-generation stealth fighter)
  • KJ-600 (early warning aircraft, comparable to the U.S. E-2D Hawkeye)
  • UAVs for reconnaissance and aerial refueling

The ship will also have a spacious hangar to accommodate these aircraft, enabling simultaneous takeoff and landing operations thanks to an angled deck and two catapults on the starboard side.

The Nuclear Reactor of the Type 004 and the Revolution in the Chinese Fleet

The adoption of nuclear propulsion by the Type 004 was not a random decision. The Longwei project, responsible for the reactor’s development, has already tested a land prototype at NPIC in Mucheng. Acquisition reports suggest that the system will be integrated into an electric propulsion system, which could revolutionize the Chinese fleet.

In addition to powering the ship’s engines, nuclear energy will enable the use of directed energy weapons, such as lasers or electromagnetic guns, although there has yet to be official confirmation regarding their implementation. If these technologies are included, the Type 004 will become one of the most advanced ships in the world.

The Future of the Chinese Navy and the Race for Naval Dominance

The development of the Type 004 represents a watershed moment in the race for naval dominance. If successful, it will place China in the elite group of nations that operate nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, a feat that, until now, only the U.S. has mastered with 11 units of this type.

However, American operational superiority is still evident. The U.S. has decades of experience with large-scale naval operations, while China is still consolidating its high-seas warfare doctrine.

The construction schedule suggests that the Type 004 will be assembled between 2024 and 2025, with a launch expected between 2026 and 2028 and entry into service between 2030 and 2032. If everything goes as planned, the Type 004 could redefine the balance of power in the Pacific and further pressure the U.S. and its allies in the region.
