China, Always One Step Ahead in the Global Scenario, Is Implementing Strict Rules to Authorize the Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Country. According to Reports, This Approval Comes With a Surprising Condition: the Technology Must Follow Socialist Values.

According to experts, this decision marks a new chapter in the global technological race, highlighting China’s commitment to integrating the ideology of the Communist Party into digital innovations.

As per reports, China’s ambition is clear: to become the world’s leading artificial intelligence market.

To achieve this, the country is investing massively in the sector, but with one fundamental requirement. Companies must incorporate fundamental socialist values into their generative AI models.

According to CNBC, China’s Cyberspace Administration (CAC), the country’s main internet regulator, is the entity responsible for ensuring that these values are conveyed to the machines.

AI Undergoes Rigorous Testing Before Being Released

Before any technology is launched, AI models undergo meticulous testing conducted by Chinese authorities. These tests include questions on politically sensitive topics and about President Xi Jinping.

If the answers do not meet the government’s expectations, the company must revise its AI model and submit it for retesting. This policy applies to both giants like ByteDance and Alibaba as well as small startups.

China is considered a pioneer in the regulation of generative artificial intelligence, having undertaken this process last year. Part of this regulation requires that AI services adhere to the fundamental values of socialism and not generate illegal content.

To comply with these policies, a “security filtering” is necessary. This process is complex, as large language models (LLMs) are trained on a significant amount of English content that may not align with Chinese values.

To adapt the models to Chinese values, companies remove problematic information and create a database of sensitive words and phrases. This causes popular chatbots to often refuse to answer certain questions.

What’s the Result?

For experts, the requirement that artificial intelligence be socialist reflects the Chinese government’s concern with ideological coherence and social stability. This approach may influence the development of AI technologies in the country, steering investments toward areas that align with the objectives of the Communist Party.

Additionally, this policy may impact how international companies interact with the Chinese market, requiring adaptations to comply with local regulations. Companies like ByteDance and Alibaba have already begun to adapt their AI models to meet government requirements.

Aligning AI models with socialist values involves a continuous process of review and updating. These companies are investing in dedicated teams to ensure that their technologies comply with the standards set by the CAC.

Other Countries May Follow China’s Example

With China leading the way in AI regulation, other countries may follow suit and implement similar policies. The integration of ideological values into artificial intelligence is a theme that may gain global prominence, especially in nations with authoritarian governments.

Do you think China is right to demand that its AI be socialist? Leave your comment below and share your opinion on the matter.
