Sany Completes Concrete Pouring of East Tower of Shiziyang Bridge, Marking a Significant Milestone for the US$ 7 Billion Project in China.

The construction of the Shiziyang Bridge, one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects underway in China, has reached a significant milestone with the recent completion of the concrete pouring at the east tower. This project, which spans the Pearl River Delta in Guangdong and has an estimated cost of US$ 7 billion, is gaining attention for its use of new technologies and innovative methods. Equipment manufacturer Sany played a crucial role in this process, utilizing advanced concrete pouring techniques to overcome the challenges posed by the magnitude and complexity of the structure. This development not only highlights the advancement of modern engineering but also reinforces the potential impact of the bridge on the economic development of the Greater Bay Area.

Advanced Concrete Pouring Technology

The Shiziyang Bridge in China will be one of the largest and most impressive in the world.

With a total length of over 35 km, the structure will feature a two-level suspension bridge, with a central span measuring 2.2 km in length.

This project not only stands out for its magnitude but also for the technical complexity involved in its construction.

The Sany, based in Changsha, plays an essential role in the construction of the bridge. The company provided specialized concrete pump trucks for pouring the foundations of the towers that support the main span of the bridge.

These towers, standing 367 meters tall, require a solid and sturdy base, crucial for ensuring the stability of the structure.

The concrete was poured using C45 concrete, a mix with a compressive strength of 45 megapascals.

This type of concrete is known for its high durability and strength, making it an ideal choice for large engineering projects.

However, the use of this concrete posed a significant challenge for Sany’s equipment, requiring technological innovation to be handled appropriately.

To complete the task, four pump trucks operated continuously for 22 hours.

Sany implemented a continuous pressure pumping system combined with advanced digital main valve technology.

This system brought significant improvements, such as a 20% increase in the efficiency of concrete directional changes and greater flow capacity.

Additionally, the new power transmission allowed for a reduction in the operational motor speed by 300 rpm, which helped prevent blockages in the pipelines and ensured a more precise flow of concrete.

Impact and Importance of the Project for China

The Shiziyang Bridge, when completed, will have a significant impact on the Greater Bay Area, which includes major cities such as Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou.

With 16 traffic lanes, the bridge will be a key piece for the economic development of the region, facilitating transportation and mobility in one of the most dynamic areas of China.

In addition to its economic impact, the Shiziyang Bridge will set several records. Among them are the longest span, which will be approximately 200 meters longer than that of the 1915 Çanakkale Bridge over the Dardanelles, the highest number of lanes on a bridge, and the tallest main tower.

These records highlight not only the grandeur of the project but also the technological innovation involved.

Sany’s Statement

The project of the Shiziyang Bridge is the result of international collaboration. The design was carried out by Knight Architects in London, with support from Cowi, of Denmark, as consulting engineer.

China Communications began construction in 2021 and has been continuously working to meet the project’s objectives.

Sany’s president, Xiang Wenbo, emphasized the importance of completing the supporting platform of the east tower.

“The successful completion of the supporting platform of the east tower of the Shiziyang Bridge demonstrates Sany’s leadership in technological innovation and construction efficiency, setting new standards in the industry”, stated Wenbo.

This advancement not only highlights Sany’s ability to overcome technical challenges but also underscores the company’s role as a leader in construction technology.
