The China reinforced its bet on innovation by investing 3.63 trillion yuan in research and development in 2024.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics of China (September 29, 2025), this amount represents a growth of 8.9% compared to 2023.
The result confirms the trend of continuous expansion of resources dedicated to science and technology.
Furthermore, the investment intensity reached 2.69% of the national GDP, a result that marks an advance of 0.11 percentage points compared to the previous year.
This growth even exceeded the annual average projected in the 14th Five-Year Plan, reinforcing the country’s strategic commitment.
Consistent Progress in Basic and Applied Research
Official data show that funding for basic research reached 250.09 billion yuan in 2024.
This amount represented an increase of 10.7% over 2023.
In this category, China already holds the second-largest global volume of investments, trailing only the United States.
At the same time, resources for applied research amounted to 430.55 billion yuan, registering substantial growth of 17.6%.
Additionally, experimental development absorbed 2.95 trillion yuan, representing an increase of 7.6% compared to the previous period.
Record Distribution and Increased Corporate Participation
Investments in science and technology accounted for 6.88% of the total national resources allocated to research and development.
This was the largest percentage ever recorded in the country’s history.
In this context, companies received the largest share, approximately 2.82 trillion yuan in 2024.
At the same time, government research institutions obtained 423.16 billion yuan.
Meanwhile, universities and higher education institutions were awarded 306.55 billion yuan, strengthening cooperation between academia, government, and the productive sector.
