Goldin Finance 117, a 597-Meter Skyscraper, Is the Largest Abandoned Building on the Planet, Reflecting the Grandeur and the Challenges of Megaconstructions in China.
The China has established itself as the uncontested leader when it comes to megaconstructions. Among imposing bridges, challenging railway tunnels, and gigantic buildings, the country is home to the tallest abandoned skyscraper in the world. The Goldin Finance 117, a project that was supposed to be a landmark in the city of Tianjin, ended up becoming a symbol of the challenges faced in projects of this magnitude.
The Goldin Finance 117, also known as China 117 Tower, was designed to be one of the tallest skyscrapers in the world, with 128 floors intended for hotels, shops, and luxury residences. Standing at 597 meters tall, the building is located on the outskirts of Tianjin, one of the largest and most important cities in China, which has about 15 million inhabitants and plays a crucial role in the country’s economy.

Construction of the Goldin Finance 117 began in 2008, as part of the ambitious Goldin Metropolitan Scheme, which aimed to turn the area into a high-end business and trade center. However, the crisis in the Chinese real estate sector in 2010 halted construction progress, which was already well advanced. After several attempts to resume work, construction was definitively suspended in 2019, leaving the building unfinished and topped by two enormous cranes.

The building, which had approximately 3/4 of its facade completed, now holds the Guinness record as the tallest abandoned skyscraper in the world. Despite the title, the Goldin Finance 117 represents a financial failure for its creators, since the project was self-financed and did not receive government support.
Chinese Government Established New Policies to Limit Height
China, which was once recognized for its bold megaconstructions, such as the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Mega Bridge and the world’s most complex railway tunnel, now faces new regulatory challenges. After years of rampant construction, the Chinese government, under the leadership of Xi Jinping, established new policies to limit building heights. Currently, constructions over 500 meters tall are prohibited, and even towers of 250 meters or more face severe restrictions.
These measures aim to recover the Chinese architectural identity, moving away from copies of Western buildings and ensuring that new constructions meet strict safety standards. Goldin Finance 117, although unfinished, remains a reminder of the ambitions and risks associated with megaconstructions in China.
Now, the fate of the skyscraper remains uncertain. Although the building continues to dominate the Tianjin skyline, there are no signs that construction will resume, and it remains a symbol of the impact of government policies on the urban landscape of China.
