Midea Opens New Factory in Pouso Alegre with Capacity for 1.3 Million Products, Boosting the Home Appliance Market and Strengthening the National Industry with Innovation and Efficiency!

The Chinese company Midea officially inaugurated a new home appliance factory in Pouso Alegre, South of Minas Gerais, on Monday (9). The unit, which will produce for the home appliance market, received R$ 630 million in investments and is the company’s first fully owned plant in Brazil. The new Midea factory promises to create hundreds of jobs.

New Midea Factory in Pouso Alegre Will Have Installed Capacity of 1.3 Million

The company also has industrial complexes in Manaus and Canoas, such as Midea Carrier, a joint venture with Carrier. The Amazonas unit produces residential air conditioners and microwaves, while the one in Rio Grande do Sul manufactures commercial air conditioners. In operation since August, the new Midea factory in Pouso Alegre is initially focused on refrigerators and automatic washers for the home appliance market.

The installed capacity of the new unit is 1.3 million products per year, divided between 700,000 refrigerators and 600,000 washing machines. The CEO of Midea Carrier, Felipe Costa, states that the company’s goal is to reach maximum production potential in two years.

By the end of this month, the new Midea factory will reach a workforce of 700 employees. To assist in the ramp-up, the number of employees is expected to rise to a thousand by the end of 2025. According to the executive, having a complex like the one in Pouso Alegre is essential to competitively participate in the Brazilian white-line home appliance market in the medium and long term. The executive emphasizes that the company has moved from being a mid-tier player to competing at the top.

Midea Undergoing Major Expansion Phase

According to the executive, the company is already in third place in the home appliance market in the country, with about 8% market share in the refrigerator segment and between 6% and 7% in washing machines; however, it is far from the top players, and the goal is to catch up.

Costa concludes that the company knows there is a gap to the leaders; however, its mission is precisely with this investment in the new Midea factory in Pouso Alegre and with others it is making in branding and distribution, to adjust at the front end later on.

The booming national market attracted Midea, which planned the Pouso Alegre factory to serve it; however, the plant may also serve as a base for exports. The company is exploring opportunities in South America and even Latin America, according to the CEO.

The multinational still has plans for expanding the complex and its product portfolio. The executive states that a physical and logistical expansion of the unit is under consideration, which could include logistics warehouses and the installation of new production lines.

Pouso Alegre Advances with the Arrival of the New Midea Factory and Job Creation

The official inauguration ceremony of the new factory of the Chinese company was attended by several authorities, including the State Secretary of Economic Development, Fernando Passalio. The state public manager highlighted in his speech that having brands like Midea in Minas Gerais brings credibility to investors.

Also present at the ceremony was the mayor of Pouso Alegre, Colonel Dimas, who emphasized the fact that the city could also benefit from the establishment of suppliers for the multinational. According to him, some companies are already looking for land in the region.

The municipal leader further highlighted Midea’s arrival to transform the municipality, known as a pharmaceutical and food hub, into a center for home appliance industry.
