New Hybrid Shower Technology Promises to Heat Water with Up to 74% Energy Savings Compared to Electric Showers. See How It Works and Whether It’s Worth Installing.

The electric shower is one of the most common items in Brazilian homes. Simple, affordable, and easy to install, it provides hot showers even in the coldest regions of the country. However, it is also cited as one of the main culprits for high electricity bills, especially during winter. Now, a new technology is starting to change this scenario: the hybrid shower.

With an innovative proposal, this new generation of devices combines different energy sources — electric, solar, or gas — and promises to maintain thermal comfort during showers, but with energy savings of up to 74%, according to a recent study by USP. The promise is clear: more efficiency, sustainability, and less impact on the budget.

What Is the Hybrid Shower and How Does It Work?

As the name suggests, the hybrid shower uses two or more energy sources to heat water. Unlike the traditional electric shower, which relies exclusively on the electrical grid and requires high instantaneous loads, the hybrid model operates intelligently: it heats quickly with electricity and then switches to a secondary source — such as solar heating or piped gas.

This transition is automatic and invisible to the user. In other words, the water temperature remains stable throughout the shower, but electricity consumption significantly decreases. This energy adaptation capability makes the hybrid shower one of the most economical and technological systems in the sector today.

Proven Savings: Up to 74% Less Energy Consumption

A study conducted by the International Reference Center for Water Reuse (CIRRA), in partnership with the University of São Paulo (USP), compared different types of residential heating. The result indicated that the hybrid shower is the most economical among all available options, even outperforming standalone solar heaters and high-efficiency electric models.

The research identified that in an average household, replacing the traditional electric shower with a hybrid system can reduce energy consumption by up to 74%, which represents significant savings over the month — especially in homes with multiple occupants.

Hybrid Shower Is Also a More Sustainable Option

In addition to the direct savings on the electricity bill, the hybrid shower stands out as an environmentally friendly alternative. By using solar energy, a clean and renewable source, the device helps reduce the emission of polluting gases and decrease dependency on the Brazilian energy matrix, which is still based on hydraulic and thermal sources.

This characteristic makes it particularly appealing to consumers looking for more sustainable solutions for everyday life without giving up the comfort of a hot shower.

Types of Hybrid Showers Available on the Market

With the popularization of the technology, the Brazilian market already has various options for hybrid showers, adaptable to different budgets and usage profiles. Among the main models are:

  • Digital, with precise temperature control through electronic panels;
  • Electronic, which allow temperature adjustment even when the device is on;
  • Multi-temperature, focusing on water savings and efficient heat control.

The choice of the ideal model depends on the structure of the house, the availability of solar energy or gas, and the desired level of automation.

Is It Worth Switching from an Electric Shower to a Hybrid Shower?

The answer is: it depends on your consumption profile and the infrastructure of the residence. The hybrid shower requires a higher initial investment, especially in cases where it will be necessary to install an auxiliary system, such as solar panels or a gas heater. The installation tends to be more complex and may involve changes to the home’s plumbing and electrical network.

On the other hand, the financial return comes over the medium term. In homes with intensive use of hot showers, the savings generated on energy consumption offset the initial installation costs. Additionally, hybrid systems tend to have a longer lifespan than traditional electric models, which is also a factor in the equation.

Despite the higher initial cost, the savings generated over the months, combined with the positive environmental impact, make the hybrid shower an increasingly viable option — and a growing trend in smart and efficient home projects.
