City Receives Billion-Dollar Factory of Sustainable Aviation Fuel, Generating 800 Jobs and Boosting Innovation in the National Aviation Sector.

Sarandi, in Paraná, has been chosen to host Latin America’s first sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) factory, according to an official announcement made this Tuesday, the 3rd.

The investment from the American multinational Satarem America Inc. amounts to R$ 2.3 billion (approximately US$ 425 million) and is expected to generate about 800 direct jobs, in addition to up to 3,000 indirect positions, boosting the regional economy.

The project positions Sarandi and the Maringá region as national and international leaders in the transition to cleaner, renewable energy sources in the aviation sector, which is considered strategic for the future of global aviation.

Factory Installation and Raw Material

The industrial plant will be installed on the border between Maringá and Sarandi, where ethanol, an abundant raw material in the region, will initially be used for SAF production.

According to the multinational, the fuel produced will have very low greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with global goals established by the Paris Agreement to achieve net-zero emissions in the aviation sector by 2050.

The expectation is that the first liter of sustainable fuel will be manufactured in December 2028, marking a milestone for the Brazilian and Latin American industry.

Economic and Environmental Impact

According to the Vice Governor of Paraná, Darci Piana, the initiative is a bet on the accelerated growth of the sustainable fuel market in commercial aviation, which increasingly demands less polluting alternatives.

“Maringá will host a project of global impact, positioning Paraná at the forefront of the global energy transition,” said Piana during a meeting in Curitiba with representatives of Satarem.

Reasons for Choosing Sarandi/Maringá

The choice of Sarandi/Maringá was not casual.

According to Jerome Friler, CEO of Satarem America Inc., three factors influenced the decision: the ample availability of ethanol in the state, the efficient logistic infrastructure—especially the proximity to the Port of Paranaguá—and the favorable environment for investments.

“This is our company’s largest investment in Latin America currently,” emphasized Friler, also highlighting the company’s social commitment.

“We want 50% of our employees to be women and 30% young people, strengthening inclusion in the industrial sector.”

Project Expansion and International Partnerships

In addition to supplying the national and international market with SAF, Satarem is already studying to expand its operations with a second factory in the region.

This new unit will utilize alternative raw materials, such as biogas, which increases the company’s potential in the field of renewable energies.

Partnerships with international airlines, including Ethiopian Airlines, are under negotiation to ensure the commercialization of the fuel produced in Brazil, reinforcing the global dimension of the project.

Role of Public Policies

The State Secretary of Industry, Commerce and Services, Marco Brasil, participated in the meeting and highlighted the decisive role of state public policies in making the investment feasible.

According to him, the recent state decree focused on attracting strategic projects to Paraná was crucial in bringing Satarem to the region.

“Without a stable regulatory environment and clear incentives, this billion-dollar investment would hardly materialize,” explained Brasil.

The Potential of Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is considered a key component in reducing emissions in the aviation sector, which accounts for about 2% of global CO2 emissions, and the demand for green alternatives is growing rapidly.

According to industry data, the use of SAF can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional fossil fuel.

The adoption of this fuel can transform aviation into a more sustainable segment, ensuring that air mobility remains compatible with global efforts to combat climate change.

Economic Benefits for Paraná and Brazil

In addition to the environmental impact, the factory will bring significant economic gains to Paraná and Brazil.

With about 800 direct jobs expected, the project should boost sectors such as logistics, commerce, and services in neighboring cities, contributing to regional development.

The expectation is that the SAF production chain will also foster technological advancement and innovation in the country, opening avenues for research and improvement of industrial processes.

The Future of the Sustainable Fuel Market in Brazil

With investments of this magnitude, Sarandi and Maringá are coming onto the radar of major investors and can consolidate their position in a strategic and promising market.

The project signals an opportunity for Brazil to diversify its energy matrix and assume a prominent role in the global sustainable aviation fuels industry.

Eu sou de Minas Gerais e gostaria muito de trabalhar no laboratório nessa empresa. Com certeza será uma empresa muito bonita e a população irá ganhar muito com a chegada dela.
