The asteroid Psyche, located between Mars and Jupiter, has puzzled scientists for years due to its unusual composition and brightness. Valued at US$ 55 quintillion, it is considered one of the most valuable celestial bodies in the Solar System, due to the high concentration of metals like gold, platinum, and cobalt.

Now, a new study suggests that Psyche’s metallic shine may be the result of eruptions of molten metal, a rare phenomenon called ferrovulcanism.

A Bright and Enigmatic Body

Psyche reflects almost a third of the sunlight that hits its surface, making it at least twice as reflective as most known asteroids.

This characteristic has sparked the curiosity of researchers, who are trying to understand what causes such brightness.

According to the study, the phenomenon could be explained by internal processes of solidification and metallic eruption.

The result of these reactions would be the extremely bright surface, composed of metallic material expelled from the interior of the celestial body.

The Theory of Ferrovulcanism

Planetary scientist Samuel Courville from Arizona State University explained that ferrovulcanism works similarly to regular volcanism.

It’s like normal volcanism, except that instead of molten rock, the ‘lava’ is molten metal,” he said in an interview with Live Science.

The hypothesis proposes that the interior of the asteroid began to solidify from the outside in. As the liquid metal accumulated in the core, differences in density and pressure may have forced some of this material to rise, causing metallic eruptions on the surface.

Composition and Origin of the Phenomenon

Researchers highlighted that this type of activity would only be possible in asteroids with certain chemical compositions — similar to those of rare meteorites that have fallen to Earth.

These fragments may have provided important clues for understanding Psyche’s behavior and confirming the possibility of ferrovulcanism beyond our planet.

Moreover, the study reinforces the idea that Psyche may represent the exposed core of a planet that never fully formed.

This possibility makes the investigation even more relevant, as it could reveal details about the early stages of planetary formation in the Solar System.

NASA Mission Seeks Answers

To verify these hypotheses, NASA launched the Psyche mission in 2023, an ambitious project aimed at studying the asteroid up close.

The namesake spacecraft is currently heading toward the celestial body and is set to arrive at its destination in July 2029.

Over the course of two years, the equipment will photograph the surface and collect data on the composition and internal structure of the asteroid.

This information could confirm whether the shine of Psyche truly comes from metal expelled during ancient eruptions.

The mission promises to be one of the agency’s most significant in the field of planetary geology.

Researchers hope it will provide direct evidence to support the findings published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets.

The Astronomical Value of Psyche

In addition to its scientific interest, Psyche attracts attention due to its estimated value. The abundance of valuable metals has led to the projection of a market value of about US$ 55 quintillion — a sum that, if it were possible to extract and bring to Earth, would exceed the entire global gross domestic product.

This estimate, although theoretical, shows the magnitude of the asteroid’s metallic wealth. However, space mining of bodies like Psyche is still far beyond current technological capabilities.

Even so, the study of its origin and composition could pave the way for future explorations. After all, understanding how metal behaves in extreme environments helps decipher the history of planets and may inspire new technologies for space missions.

Psyche, therefore, is not just a metallic jewel floating between Mars and Jupiter, but also a window to understanding the processes that shaped the Solar System billions of years ago.
