Official Data Indicates Significant Progress by Clin in Recycling in Niterói, with Sustainability Growth and 98% Increase in the Municipal Index. Understand What Changed in Environmental Management, the Updated Numbers, and the Upcoming Challenges of the City.

The Niterói Cleaning Company (Clin) presented new relevant data from the municipality’s recent environmental agenda: the recycling rate of solid waste in Niterói has nearly doubled in just two years. Official data indicates progress in sustainability indicators in Niterói following a significant increase in solid waste recycling.

Information presented by Clin shows that the municipal index rose from 2.61% in 2023 to 5.17% in 2025, representing a growth of 98% during the period. The figures were disclosed during a technical workshop that brought together public managers and specialists to evaluate strategic indicators of the municipality.

According to an article published by the Cidade de Niterói website on March 1, although the percentage is still considered low in absolute terms, the increase represents a significant evolution in the sustainability indicator related to recycling. The data helps to understand the current situation of solid waste management in the city and indicates areas for improvement in the coming years.

Clin Presents Growth in Sustainability Indicator in Niterói

The Niterói Cleaning Company presented the data during the workshop “Smart Cities: Situational Diagnosis of Niterói”, held at the auditorium of the Municipal Department of Education. The meeting aimed to analyze municipal indicators related to urban planning, sanitation, and solid waste management.

The highlight was the growth in the sustainability indicator related to recycling. In 2023, the index was 2.61%. In 2025, it rose to 5.17%. The 98% increase demonstrates evolution in the volume of recycled waste in relation to the total collected in the municipality.

The data was organized with the support of the Information Assessment and Management Nuclei (NAGIs), which monitor municipal indicators used in public policy planning. Clin has participated in NAGIs activities for five years, contributing technical information related to urban cleaning and solid waste management.

Monitoring Indicators Guide Environmental Management Goals

According to Clin’s president, Acílio Borges, the periodic monitoring of indicators allows for the evaluation of the performance of actions undertaken and the establishment of new goals for municipal management.

The meetings promoted by the NAGIs bring together representatives from different areas of public administration to analyze updated data on municipal services. Among the topics discussed are basic sanitation, solid waste management, and urban planning.

Continuous monitoring of indicators helps to track the evolution of services and identify areas that can be improved over time.

Recycling Grows 98% and Improves Sustainability Indicator

The 98% growth in the recycling index represents the main evolution recorded in the sustainability indicator analyzed by Clin. The index rose from 2.61% in 2023 to 5.17% in 2025. This indicator measures the proportion of recycled waste in relation to the total collected by the municipal urban cleaning system.

Although still below levels considered high in recycling programs, the result indicates an increase in the volume of materials sent for reuse. Recycling helps to reduce the volume of waste sent to landfills and increase the recovery of materials such as paper, plastic, glass, and metal.

Growth of the Indicator Depends on Population Participation

Experts point out that the advancement of recycling depends on factors such as the expansion of selective collection, educational campaigns, and public participation in the correct separation of waste.

The adherence of residents is considered essential to increase the amount of recyclable materials sent for sorting. Proper separation of household waste facilitates the work of selective collection teams and improves the recovery of recyclable materials.

The workshop where the data was presented is part of a municipal diagnosis aligned with the Brazilian Charter for Smart Cities, a document that guides municipalities in adopting technological and sustainable solutions for urban management.

Among the topics analyzed were basic sanitation, solid waste management, urban planning, and monitoring of public indicators. Clin’s participation in the diagnosis contributes to the updating of information related to urban cleaning and municipal recycling.

Data Helps Guide Recycling Planning

According to Clin’s Sustainability Manager, Lélia Lomardo, the compilation of data allows for a better understanding of the actions developed and monitoring the evolution of municipal indicators.

The use of this information helps to guide the planning of activities related to solid waste management. Tracking the indicators also enables the evaluation of the results of actions undertaken over the years.

Despite the 98% growth in the sustainability indicator linked to recycling, the index of 5.17% shows that there is still room for expanding the reuse of waste in the municipality.

Among the challenges are the expansion of selective collection, increased public participation, and strengthening sorting infrastructures for recyclable materials. The continuous monitoring of indicators by the NAGIs will allow the evaluation of results’ evolution in the coming years.

What Do the Data Show About Recycling and Sustainability in Niterói?

The data presented by Clin indicate growth in the sustainability indicator related to recycling between 2023 and 2025. The increase from 2.61% to 5.17% represents a growth of 98% over the period and shows an evolution in the volume of recycled waste.

The indicators monitored by the NAGIs continue to be used to track the performance of solid waste management in the municipality and guide the planning of future actions.

If the trend observed in the last two years continues, the city could consolidate a prominent regional position in solid waste management. More than a statistical figure, the evolution represents a continuous commitment to environmental quality and building a city better prepared for contemporary urban challenges.
