CMA CGM Launches Public Call for Carbon Emission Reduction Projects in the Maritime Industry and Prepares for the French Energy Transition
The container shipping giant CMA CGM is preparing for the strong growth of the energy transition in the European market over the coming years.
It has launched a public call for carbon emission reduction projects in the operations of the sector, aiming for innovative initiatives for the field.

The German ship Bottsand splits its hull in two halves in the middle of the ocean to swallow spilled oil on the surface, separating the oil from the water inside a 790 cubic meter tank and then closing again. It is the only ship in the world factory-designed to split in half as part of normal operations, and the crew of six people who operate everything is civilian.
-
With almost 70 meters in width at the stern and a shape resembling a “giant slice of cheese,” the Ramform Titan tows up to 24 seismic cables to sweep the ocean floor in 3D and reveal oil reserves hidden beneath kilometers of sediment.

How a 131-ton, 11-meter propeller supports 90% of global trade and transforms the largest container ships on the planet.
-
With a length of 225 meters and a capacity of 76 thousand tons, this ship “sinks” its own deck down to 28 meters deep to accommodate war destroyers, oil platforms, and giant radars floating above, and then emerges with everything intact on top like a colossal tray crossing oceans.
The company has forecasted investments of €200 million to finance the most advantageous ventures from startups and new companies in the market.
The funding supports the €300 million that the French government is allocating for the development of zero-emission vessels.
The announcement of the new investments for low carbon emission projects was made by Rodolphe Saadé, chairman and CEO of the CMA CGM Group.
The project call is open to all companies in the French maritime industry that wish to accelerate the pace of carbon emission reductions in the following areas:
- cargo transportation
- tourism and cruising
- fishing and seafood
- infrastructure
- maritime and nautical industries
- renewable energies.
CMA CGM intends to select projects for the multimillion investments based on development viability, expected outcomes, and the impact they will have on the maritime industry.
Furthermore, the French operator stated that some of these projects may receive shared investments from the public sector and private operators and benefit from assistance from maritime industry experts.
This way, the country’s government and the company are joining forces to accelerate the reduction of carbon emissions in the sector.
Company’s Investment Initiative in Carbon Emission Reduction Projects in the Maritime Industry Will Receive Public Support
CMA CGM will receive support from the French State for the development of the initiative regarding the new projects for the maritime industry.
In collaboration with the French State Secretariat for the Sea and various public sector organizations involved in the France 2030 plan, the company will continue the initiative throughout 2023.
The special fund of CMA CGM, supported by a budget of US$ 1.5 billion over five years, has been allocated to new research and innovation projects in the French maritime industry.
The company has been heavily investing in decarbonization initiatives across sectors over the last few months.
For example, in June 2022, following in Maersk’s footsteps, CMA CGM placed its first order for vessels powered by methanol, aiming at reducing carbon emissions.
With the new investments planned for carbon emission reduction projects in the maritime industry, CMA CGM is preparing for an even cleaner future.
