New Bill Proposes Allowing 16-Year-Olds to Get Their First Driver’s License.

A bill under review by the Government of Brazil proposes to lower the minimum age for obtaining a National Driver’s License (CNH) from 18 to 16 years. Presented by Deputy Roberto Duarte, the initiative aims to allow young people over 16 to drive, arguing that if they already have the right to vote, they should take on responsibilities in traffic. The project highlights granting a driving permit valid for two years. However, the proposal is still in the analysis phase, generating divergent opinions on the measure.

Reduction of Minimum Age for Obtaining Driver’s License Discussed by the Government of Brazil

A new bill is stirring discussions about the National Driver’s License (CNH) in Brazil.

Currently in public agencies, the proposal aims to decrease the minimum age for obtaining the CNH from 18 to 16 years, allowing young people at that age to drive.

Deputy Roberto Duarte (Republicans-AC) is responsible for the initiative, which aims to grant driving permission to young people over 16.

The deputy argues that if young people already have the right to vote and engage in political issues, they should also take on responsibilities in traffic, including obtaining the CNH.

What Does the New Bill Say?

According to the bill’s text, if approved, young people would be allowed to drive with a permit valid for two years.

However, it is important to highlight that the Bill is still under review and does not have immediate application.

While the bill is under discussion, opinions about lowering the minimum age for obtaining the CNH in Brazil remain divided.

Supporters and opponents present arguments for and against the initiative, which could drastically change the dynamics for young people across the country.

Currently, the criteria for issuing the CNH include requirements such as literacy, presentation of documentation (identity, CPF, and proof of residence), undergoing medical and psychological exams, completing a theoretical course on traffic legislation and defensive driving, practical lessons with a driving instructor, and passing a practical driving test.

It is important to note that until the project goes through all the procedural stages, the minimum age for obtaining the CNH remains 18 years.

The established criteria vary according to location, but the minimum age is a constant throughout the process of obtaining the document.

Now, we must wait for the next steps of the Bill’s progress to know the future of obtaining the CNH among young people in Brazil!
