New App Promises Messages Without Internet Using Decentralized Technology, Focused on Privacy and Extended Reach
Jack Dorsey, known worldwide as the co-founder and former CEO of Twitter, revealed an innovative personal project in July 2025: Bitchat. This messaging app emerges as a communication alternative where the connection is limited. To achieve this, the app relies on a Bluetooth Mesh network. Thus, users can exchange messages without needing Wi-Fi, 4G, or 5G. This information was confirmed by Dorsey himself. He shared details on GitHub and released a beta version for iPhone via TestFlight, the App Store’s testing program.
Secure Data Exchange Without External Dependencies
To understand the technical workings, it is worth highlighting the concept of Bluetooth Mesh. This technology allows for the formation of a decentralized network between devices. In this model, each device acts as both a transmitter and receiver at the same time. Messages take an indirect path, jumping from device to device until they reach their final destination. Despite the usual limitations of Bluetooth, the range is surprising. Typically, the range is limited to 100 meters. Jack Dorsey claimed to have sent messages up to 300 meters. This feat occurred because some devices acted as bridges between clusters, thus increasing the communication radius. According to the creator, there are plans to support Wi-Fi Direct, which will improve speed and range.
Privacy With Automatic Self-Destruction of Messages
In addition to the decentralized network, Bitchat only stores data on the user’s device. As such, there is no central server involved. Another relevant point is the automatic disappearance of messages, which provides more security by default. For group chats, protection is enhanced with passwords. This approach reinforces the app’s commitment to privacy. All of this happens without giving up practicality.

App Addresses Scenarios Like Protests and Festivals With Congested Networks
The app’s usefulness is confirmed when traditional networks fail. Typically, large events experience congestion in mobile networks, making communication between people impossible. With Bitchat, users can locate friends using just the Bluetooth Mesh network. CNBC recalled Bridgefy, another similar app used during protests in Hong Kong in 2019. Interestingly, this project had the support of Biz Stone, another co-founder of Twitter, reinforcing the potential of decentralized initiatives to help circumvent internet blockades during protests.
Prospects for Expansion and Evolution in the Near Future
Bitchat started as an experimental project over a weekend. Therefore, the growth expectations are high. In July 2025, Dorsey revealed significant advancements. Furthermore, the beta community is already providing valuable feedback for improvements. As a result, the integration with Wi-Fi Direct should extend coverage, consequently offering more stability in connections. Additionally, the decentralized model, combined with local storage, reinforces security, ensuring communication that is resilient to network failures. Bitchat underscores the trend of offline alternatives, which is essential in a context of increasing concern over digital privacy.
