Coins Of 1 Real From The 2016 Olympics Can Be Worth Up To R$ 1,300! Find Out Why These Commemorative Pieces Are So Valued And How You Can Have This Money.

The Central Bank, nearly 10 years ago, launched a special collection of commemorative coins to celebrate the 2016 Olympics and Paralympics held in Rio de Janeiro. Among them, the 1 real Olympic coins stand out, which, despite being in general circulation, attract the interest of collectors and can be worth quite a bit of money today.

The Collection Of 1 Real Coins From The 2016 Olympics

The Central Bank released a total of 36 commemorative coins in 2016, divided into four categories: four gold, 16 silver, and 16 bimetallic.

The 1 real coins, made for general circulation, were not different in appearance from other coins of the same value, but they hold a special significance due to the event they commemorate.

Although the launch of these coins happened some time ago, the collectors’ market remains vibrant.

Many Brazilians are still searching for these coins in good condition, willing to pay high prices for them.

If you have any of these coins stored away, you might have a small fortune in hand.

The appreciation of the 1 real Olympic coins occurs mainly due to the demand from collectors willing to pay a high price in cash for them.

The field of numismatics, which is the study and collection of coins, banknotes, and medals, shows a growing interest in rare items with special characteristics.

With the increase in the number of collectors and the limited supply of these coins, their prices can reach impressive levels.

The Impact Of The Olympics On Numismatics In Brazil

Before the 2016 Olympic Games, collecting coins was not a common practice among Brazilians.

However, the launch of the commemorative coins generated significant interest in the subject.

The collection of 16 coins of 1 real, each representing an Olympic or Paralympic sport, became one of the most remembered marks of the event.

Among the Olympic sports depicted on the coins were:

  • Athletics;
  • Boxing;
  • Basketball;
  • Football;
  • Golf;
  • Judo;
  • Swimming;
  • Rugby;
  • Sailing;
  • Volleyball.

For the Paralympics, the coins celebrated:

  • Paralympic Athletics;
  • Paralympic Swimming;
  • Paracanoeing;
  • Paratriathlon.

In addition to these, coins were produced featuring the mascots of the Olympic Games, honoring Tom and Vinícius, figures that also helped popularize the coins among collectors.

1 Real Olympic Coins: How Much Can They Be Worth?

Currently, some Olympic coins are being sold for considerable prices.

For example, two specific coins, one representing boxing and the other rugby, can be sold for up to R$ 1,300, as indicated by the Illustrated Catalog of Coins with Errors.

These coins have a manufacturing error: the reverse is inverted 180º in relation to the obverse.

To check if a coin has this error, you can turn it vertically. If the reverse is upside down when turned, the coin has the error and may be worth more.

With mintage of only 20 million per model, these coins are relatively rare compared to other 1 real coins, which usually have a much larger mintage.

How To Sell Rare Coins

If you are interested in selling your Olympic coins, here are some tips to get the best price:

  1. Collector Groups: Join collector groups on social media, like Facebook, where you can find specific interested buyers.
  2. Specialized Stores: Visit stores that buy and sell rare coins, both physical and online.
  3. Auctions: Participate in specialized auctions, where rare and valuable items often reach higher prices due to competition.
  4. Online Platforms: Use platforms like Mercado Livre and Shopee, which have numerous users interested in collections.

Additionally, it is important to deepen your knowledge of numismatics and gain experience in the market to get the best prices and make good money from sales.

Auctions, in particular, can be a great opportunity to sell your coins at high prices, but it is crucial to be prepared for the competition.
