He was sentenced to hang for his participation in the Inconfidência Mineira. The image of Tiradentes is flanked by the “Brazil” sign and by elements alluding to the Inconfidência Mineira, such as the triangle of the inconfidentes flag, superimposed by a bird that represents freedom and peace.

Reverse Drawing

The reverse of the coin displays, on the left, diagonal lines that highlight the face value, followed by the “cents” couplets and the year of minting.

Tiradentes

The 5-cent coins pay homage to Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, known as Tiradentes.

He became a symbol of the Inconfidência Mineira, a movement that contributed to Brazil's independence.

Captured and hanged by the Portuguese Crown on April 21, 1792, Tiradentes is remembered to this day, with his execution being a national holiday.

How much is the coin worth?

The value of coins of 5 cents varies depending on the state of conservation of each copy.

The better preserved, the greater its value to collectors.

Understanding classifications

Classifications may seem complex for beginners. See what the terms used to describe the state of conservation mean:

  • MBC (Very Well Preserved): Coins with at least 70% of their original appearance. The wear must be homogeneous.
  • Pride: Coins with at least 90% of the original details preserved. They show little trace of circulation and handling.
  • Cunho Flower: Coins without any type of wear or handling. All details of the coinage are in their original appearance and have no signs of cleaning or the use of chemicals.

MBC

A coin classified as MBC, or Very Well Preserved, must be at least 70% of its original appearance.

Wear should be even, meaning the entire piece should show signs of use evenly.

Those classified as MBC are highly sought after, but their value is lower compared to those in better condition.

Superb

These are those that continue to preserve at least 90% of the details of their original manufacture.

They show few signs of circulation and handling, which makes them more valuable than those classified as MBC.

In the collectors market, a superb is already considered an item of intermediate value.

Cunho Flower

Those classified as Flor de Cunho, or uncirculated, are the most valuable.

They do not show any type of wear or handling, keeping all details of the coinage in perfect condition.

There are no signs of cleaning or the use of chemicals, which makes them extremely rare and desired by collectors.
