Partnership Between Petrobras and Navy, Through Proantar, Provides Support for Scientific Research
Supported by Petrobras through the Brazilian Antarctic Program (Proantar), the Comandante Ferraz Antarctic Station will be reopened this Tuesday (1/14), after being partially destroyed by a fire almost seven years ago. Operated by the Brazilian Navy, the facility is intended for scientific research in the areas of environment, meteorology, biodiversity, and chemistry.

The Director of Digital Transformation and Innovation at Petrobras, Nicolás Simone, explains that the agreement allows the company to participate in research and gain access to information that enables the improvement of the meteorological, wave, and ocean current forecasting models used by Petrobras, given the sensitivity of the Antarctic region to global climate change.
With the partnership between Petrobras, through its Research Center (Cenpes), and the Navy, research, researcher missions, and teams to the region are facilitated, along with the purchase of equipment for ships and laboratories and the development of special fuels for the Antarctic environment, among other activities.

“The partnership with Proantar has existed since 1987, and during this period, a fuel resistant to extreme temperatures below 40 degrees Celsius has been developed, improved to decrease its environmental impact by reducing sulfur content and enhancing ignition quality and lubricity,” highlights Nicolás.
The station covers 4,500 square meters, has 17 laboratories, and can accommodate up to 64 people. The base also features a hybrid energy system, aimed at reducing diesel consumption and consequently lowering local greenhouse gas emissions. The diesel complement system includes eight wind power generators and 30 photovoltaic panels.
In addition to Proantar, Petrobras supports the Sectoral Plan for Marine Resources (PSRM), which facilitates scientific research and the training of human resources in the Blue Amazon and encompasses the study and monitoring of natural resources, oceanographic and climatic phenomena in marine areas, including the offshore environment where Petrobras operates.
Petrobras Launches Series Threshold
Petrobras will showcase a series called “Threshold: Frontiers of Knowledge,” featuring mini-documentaries that highlight the day-to-day challenges in extreme conditions and the threshold of human knowledge. The first episode, airing this Tuesday (1/14), recounts the work of researchers on the Antarctic continent and the journey to the Comandante Ferraz Antarctic Station. The episodes can be watched on the Nossa Energia portal (www.petrobras.com.br/nossaenergia) and on the brand’s YouTube channel.
