The Power Plant of Imetame
The power plant located in Camaçari, Bahia, will be built by Imetame and will feature a structure powered 100% by natural gas. Initially, the power plant was to be biomass from eucalyptus in Minas Gerais, but the project was based on another entrepreneur, who ended up leaving the project.
The company Mercurio Partners enabled the first natural gas power plant to achieve zero carbon emissions in the country and originated the opportunity for the project, initially designed to be a biomass power plant. The company will conduct the adaptation process to keep the natural gas UTE compliant with current regulations.

Transition from Biomass to Natural Gas at Imetame’s UTE in Bahia
Alexandre Americano, director of Mercurio Partners, says that the transition would be somewhat complex, as it would change several technical characteristics of the project that would be installed in Minas Gerais. The director highlights that it changed from boiler to rotor, from fuel and from location, which required discussions with ANP and ANEEL, as well as EPE.
In discussions with the Energy Research Company, a major concern arose regarding the fuel change at the power plant, since the new one could not have worse environmental performance than the previous one, considering whether the burning of natural gas was worse than the burning of biomass. Consequently, a greenhouse gas compensation plan was presented, following the methodology of the GHG Protocol.
According to the director of Mercurio Partners, the major challenge of the project was defining the method for calculating the tons of offset, as this had never been done before. Initially, this increase is an additional risk associated with the factory’s equation regarding this obligation. However, Imetame’s power plant in Bahia has the opportunity to obtain more competitive financing and with greater ease. He also emphasized that this is a novelty that is currently sought not only by financiers but also by potential investors in the market.
Investments Made in the Power Plant
The power plant will be built in Camaçari, Bahia, and will initially receive an investment of R$ 180 million for the project. The initial forecast is that the power plant will start operating in the second half of 2022.
Gilson Pereira, executive director of Imetame, says that “the new power plant in Bahia will consist of a combination of three types of power plants, however the other two previous plants were contracted through energy auctions. All the models of power plants used for the idea of Imetame’s project are part of the model called ‘gas-to-wire,’ staying close to Imetame’s gas wells in the Recôncavo Baiano.”
