Despite the sharp decline of 34% in the bus market, Mercedes reaffirmed in its virtual broadcast that this is the right time for investment in the public transport sector. According to the manufacturer’s forecasts, the bus market is expected to recover in 2021, closing between 12,000 and 13,700 licensed units. The expectation is that in 2021, sales will return to grow by 15 to 20%, a value that would still be below the production volumes of 2019.
Even with these results, the sales and marketing director of the bus division, Walter Barbosa, states: “But it’s positive information because it indicates growth. The performance will depend on the credit that will be offered by banks to this segment, but we are optimistic.” Mercedes-Benz’s vice president, Roberto Leoncini, recalled that in addition to the economic impact and circulation restrictions, people are still not comfortable returning to use public transportation.

Currently, due to the decline in the bus market, the manufacturer is producing in only one shift for this sector. The new line that received the investment of R$107 million is part of a package of investments for Brazil, totaling about R$2.4 billion planned by Mercedes-Benz.
The new production line brings state-of-the-art equipment technologies; however, it does not increase the daily production capacity, only allowing greater manufacturing versatility, as Mercedes can now produce a wider variety of vehicles on the same production line.
