Chinese Manufacturer Prepares Offensive in the Pickup Segment in Brazil, with Up to Five Electrified Models, National Production in Bahia, and Focus on Different Market Segments, from Compact to Large, as Part of Its Growth Strategy in the Country.
BYD aims to expand its presence in the Brazilian pickup market and is working with the possibility of having up to five models of this type in the country in the coming years.
The strategy was confirmed by the manufacturer in an interview with Autoesporte and involves a lineup made up exclusively of plug-in hybrid and 100% electric vehicles, with no plans for diesel versions.
The information was detailed by BYD’s Vice President in Brazil, Alexandre Baldy.

Goodbye expensive popular car: electric vehicle for less than R$ 70,000 starts being sold in Brazil with a range of 200 km and targets those looking to escape gasoline.
According to him, the company has structured a specific team for the development of pickups, focusing on adapting the products to the profile of the national market.
“We have created a dedicated team for pickups. And this work is very much about developing products that have greater adequacy and viability in the market to succeed,” the executive stated.
Currently, BYD operates in the segment only with the Shark pickup.
Registration data released by Fenabrave and reported by the specialized press indicate that the model registered 313 units in 2024 and reached 1,128 units in 2025, still modest numbers compared to the total volume of the segment in Brazil.
Electrification as the Base of BYD’s Strategy in Brazil
Commenting on the upcoming launches, Baldy emphasized that electrification will be a rule across the entire future lineup of the brand’s pickups.
When asked about the possibility of offering diesel engines, common in this type of vehicle in Brazil, the executive ruled out this alternative.
According to him, the company maintains its global strategy of betting on plug-in hybrid and electric systems as the main focus.
The guideline also excludes other intermediate electrification solutions.
According to BYD, models with mild hybrid, full hybrid, or range extender systems are not planned.
Thus, the new pickup projects destined for the Brazilian market should exclusively utilize PHEV or electric architectures.
Intermediate Pickup Will Be the First Confirmed Launch
Among the models in development, BYD confirmed that the first new product will be a medium-sized pickup, already seen in tests and revealed through patent registrations.
The model is expected to use a monocoque construction platform, the same approach adopted by competitors such as Fiat Toro, Ford Maverick, and Ram Rampage.
According to information published by Autoesporte, the technical base of the new pickup will be that of the Song Plus.
The structure and some design elements, such as the side creases, are expected to reference the SUV.
Items such as the bumper and front grille will have specific designs to differentiate the truck.
BYD also indicated that local production is considered essential for this project.
Assembly is expected to take place at the factory in Camaçari, in Bahia, the unit that concentrates the brand’s industrial investments in Brazil.
The manufacturer stated that the official launch of the intermediate pickup is expected in 2026.
Camaçari Concentrates the Manufacturer’s Industrial Plans
The expansion of the pickup lineup is directly linked to BYD’s industrial strategy in the country.
The Camaçari complex currently operates under SKD regime, assembling vehicles from partially disassembled sets.
According to information previously disclosed by the company, the first models assembled locally are Dolphin Mini, Song Pro, and King.
The manufacturer also reported that it plans to produce up to eight different vehicles at the unit.
In this scenario, the production of a pickup in Brazil is pointed out by the company itself as a relevant factor for enabling larger volumes, reducing logistics costs, and ensuring the supply of the dealership network.
Possible Compact Pickup Targets Segment Led by Strada

In addition to the intermediate pickup, there is the possibility that BYD will launch a compact model, with size close to that of the Fiat Strada, the sales leader in the segment in Brazil.
This information was raised by Autoesporte.
According to the publication, the Stellantis model has been internally analyzed by the Chinese brand.
Units were reportedly sent to China for technical evaluations.
So far, BYD has not officially confirmed the development of this product.
No names, schedules, or specifications have been disclosed either.
The available information indicates only that, if it progresses, the proposal would follow the standard adopted by the brand, with plug-in hybrid powertrain.
The report linked this possible project to the mechanical set 1.5 DM-i, already used in Song Pro, Song Plus, and King.
As with other plans, national production in Camaçari is considered an option to enable volume and competitiveness.
Medium and Large Pickups Remain Without Official Confirmation
Two other mentioned projects involve a medium pickup and another of large size.
The former would be positioned to compete with Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, and Chevrolet S10.
The latter would be in a higher segment, close to Ram 1500, Ford F-150, and Chevrolet Silverado.
However, there is currently no official confirmation regarding these products.
BYD has not disclosed platforms, powertrains, launch dates, or whether these models will actually reach the Brazilian market.
Portfolio Expansion Supports BYD’s Growth Target
The possible arrival of up to five pickups is part of a broader growth plan for BYD in Brazil.
The manufacturer has publicly declared its goal to be among the three largest in the country in sales volume by 2028.
The objective involves around 350,000 vehicles registered per year.
To achieve this level, the company is betting on expanding its product range and strengthening its local industrial operation.
In the pickup segment, the initial performance of the Shark indicates that the brand is still seeking to gain ground.
At the same time, the company is working on new projects aimed at different market segments, as part of a long-term strategy.
