Fuel Fraud: How Does It Work?
Adulteration occurs when prohibited substances, such as solvents, methanol, or excessive amounts of anhydrous ethanol, are mixed into gasoline or ethanol. Thus, the quality of the product drastically decreases, which causes damage to engines.
Moreover, this crime severely impacts the environment, as improper chemicals contaminate the soil and groundwater.
Authorities’ Action Against Irregular Fuels
The National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP), together with the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Civil Police, has intensified actions against this type of crime in Rio de Janeiro.
According to the O Globo portal, in December 2024, an operation in Nova Iguaçu shut down a clandestine warehouse that supplied adulterated fuels to stations throughout the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro.
The investigation revealed that the location distributed thousands of liters of contaminated fuel weekly.
Furthermore, the operation found stations selling gasoline with a high methanol content, a highly toxic substance that is prohibited in Brazil.
As a consequence, the consumption of adulterated fuel leads to mechanical failures and increases emissions of pollutants, harming public health and the environment.
Consequences for Irregular Gas Stations
During the operation, authorities sealed adulterated fuel pumps and fined the establishments involved.
Additionally, those responsible for the stations may face criminal charges for consumer fraud and environmental crime. In more severe cases, the station’s operating license may be revoked.
In June 2023, according to Agência Brasil, three gas stations were shut down in Rio de Janeiro for selling ethanol with the presence of methanol.
For this reason, the ANP recommends that consumers report irregularities upon identifying signs of adulterated fuel.
Among the main symptoms are excessive consumption, difficulty starting the engine, and sudden vehicle failures. Thus, these reports strengthen inspections and help reduce this type of fraud.
