On a typical year, the US Coast Guard responds to nearly 20,000 search and rescue cases, saving over 3,500 lives and nearly 77 million dollars in property. Another example of a rescue occurred on May 28, 2023, when a rescue team from the Cortez station saved four people from a sinking boat about 40 miles west of Egmont Key. They used a 47-foot motorized lifeboat designed to operate in rough seas and capable of turning 360 degrees and righting itself automatically.
