Understand How the Construction of the Desalination Plant in Ceará Can Take Down the Internet of Brazil. Construction Project Requires Removal of 120 Families and Causes Alarm in the Telecommunications Sector.
Have you ever imagined that a construction could take down the internet across Brazil? That’s right, the desalination plant being built at Praia do Futuro, in Fortaleza, is causing a stir! The relocation of Dessal do Ceará, the desalination plant that promises to solve water issues, will require significant changes to the land.
The new project plans to be built along the seashore, which will result in the removal of 120 families currently living in the area. The proximity to submarine cables, responsible for over 90% of data processing in all of South America, raises concerns about potential impacts on Brazilian internet.
Construction of the Desalination Plant at Praia do Futuro
“We found an agreement that reconciles the terms of constructing the desalination plant at Praia do Futuro while also accommodating the investment from the companies that will continue in Ceará”, declared Governor Elmano de Freitas.

Without a blueprint, without an engineer, and using scrap from the dump, a father spends 15 years building an 18-room castle for his daughter, featuring tram tracks, 13 fireplaces, and over 700 m², which may now be demolished.
The construction will also affect Areninha Praia do Futuro I, which will be relocated. The necessary actions for construction include the transfer of the area by SPU/CE, resettlement of families, compliance with environmental licenses, and authorization from the Brazilian Navy.
Interests of the People of Ceará Addressed
Representatives of the telecommunications sector celebrated the decision to change the location of the construction. “We managed to find a term in which the interest of the people of Ceará is addressed in the sense of having, in the near future, the water security that is so dreamed of in the State, and the protection of the telecommunications infrastructure that currently exists at Praia do Futuro”, commented Luiz Henrique Barbosa, executive president of TelComp.
Seawater Collection Will Take Place Just 567 Meters from the Submarine Cables
However, concerns persist. The seawater collection will take place just 567 meters from the submarine cables, according to Diário do Nordeste. While market sources consider this distance safe, there is still fear that the construction could interfere with data transmission.
Works Start in 2025
The works are expected to begin between late 2024 and early 2025. The total investment for the project is R$ 518.6 million, but updated values with the change of location have not yet been disclosed.
