The new project plans to be built along the seashore, which will result in the removal of 120 families currently living in the area. The proximity to submarine cables, responsible for over 90% of data processing in all of South America, raises concerns about potential impacts on Brazilian internet.

“We found an agreement that reconciles the terms of constructing the desalination plant at Praia do Futuro while also accommodating the investment from the companies that will continue in Ceará”, declared Governor Elmano de Freitas.

However, concerns persist. The seawater collection will take place just 567 meters from the submarine cables, according to Diário do Nordeste. While market sources consider this distance safe, there is still fear that the construction could interfere with data transmission.
Works Start in 2025
The works are expected to begin between late 2024 and early 2025. The total investment for the project is R$ 518.6 million, but updated values with the change of location have not yet been disclosed.
