Ford Will Make a Huge Investment in Its New Industrial Complex Which Will House 4 Factories That Will Manufacture New Electric Pickups, Autonomous Cars, and Batteries. The Complex Will Cover an Area of 15 km².

Ford announced on Tuesday (28) a new pickup factory in the U.S. and three new “gigafactories” for batteries, autonomous cars, and electric pickups. Two of these new ventures are part of the same complex named Blue Oval City. The complex will span over 15 km² in the city of Stanton, in the U.S. state of Tennessee, designed to be carbon-neutral.

The new complex of the Ford multinational will manufacture new electric pickups from the F-Series. Additionally, it will also include one of the battery factories, resulting from a partnership with Korean manufacturer SK Innovation.

The partnership between the companies was announced in May. The other two factories announced will be located in the BlueOvalSK Battery Park, which will be established in the state of Kentucky and will supply the new lines of Ford and Lincoln autonomous and electric cars. Together, the factories will produce about 86 GWh annually.

Multinational Projects to Generate Over 11,000 Jobs

Ford and SK aim to invest US$ 11 billion to build the two industrial parks and generate more than 11,000 new jobs, with 6,000 in Blue Oval City and 5,000 in the two factories in Kentucky. Production of batteries for electric pickups, autonomous, and electric cars is expected to begin in mid-2025.

According to Ford’s President and CEO, Jim Farley, in a press release, this is a pivotal moment for the company, the largest investment in history to help build an even better future for the U.S. and the world. Recently, Ford announced plans to manufacture its F-150 Lightning model, which had its pre-sale open in May and sold 20,000 units in just 12 hours.

The company aims to manufacture 15,000 electric pickups next year, 55,000 in 2023, and 80,000 in 2024. By 2025, production at the factories is expected to reach 160,000 units with the introduction of the second generation of the vehicle.

The company will invest US$ 30 billion in electric vehicles by 2025 and projects that about 40% of its sales will be electrified models by 2030. The investment in battery factories aligns with the trend in the U.S. market to catch up with growth in the segment, which is currently dominated by Asian companies.

Ford Invests in Autonomous Cars to Diversify the Automotive Industry

In addition to investments in battery production, Ford also recently announced that it will launch a delivery service with autonomous cars in partnership with Walmart, the supermarket chain, and Argo AI, a platform that develops driving systems with Artificial Intelligence.

The deliveries will be offered in the American cities of Austin, Texas, Miami, and Washington later this year. The service will utilize cars from the automaker that will be equipped with Argo AI’s independent driving system to deliver Walmart products. Deliveries will be offered within defined service areas, which can be expanded over time.
