The Largest Solar Power Plant in the World Is Inaugurated in the United Arab Emirates. With 3.2 Million Panels, Noor Abu Dhabi Can Produce Up to 1.18 Gigawatts.
The largest solar power plant in the world was inaugurated on June 29 by the Emirates Water and Electricity Company, Noor Abu Dhabi. With 3.2 million panels and the capacity to produce 1.18 gigawatts, the project can meet the energy needs of up to 90,000 people. The initiative comes as an alternative to reduce CO2 emissions in the country, which despite being 8th in global oil production and intending to stabilize extraction, still relies heavily on fossil fuels.
The new plant represents a cut of 1 million tons of CO2, equivalent to 200,000 cars off the roads, according to the state company. However, despite being a significant step for sustainable energy, the country’s focus should not shift away from oil. In March, the country’s monthly production reached 3.043 million barrels, and according to the Minister of Energy, Suhail Al Mazroui, extraction could rise to 3.5 million if necessary. “We need to meet the necessary requirements for our oil and ensure that it is not just used for storage,” the minister stated.

The reduction initiative came from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), which aims to cut the available supply in the global market to increase the price of crude oil, due to the weakening global economy and excess production of the commodity by the U.S. The continuation of this reduction will be decided today, the first, during a meeting in Vienna; the intentions of Russian President Vladimir Putin to continue with the policy have already been revealed during the G20 in Osaka last month, but Iran’s vote is still needed.
It seems that the title of the largest solar power plant in the world will not last long: the Emirates Water and Electricity Company has plans for the construction of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Park, which will produce 2 gigawatts and is expected to be inaugurated in 2020. Mohammed Hassan Al Suwaidi, director of the company, informed Gulf News that the plant is part of a country project to increase the share of clean energy to 50% of the energy matrix by 2050.
