Arkadag Is The New City Of The Future In Turkmenistan That Promises To Revolutionize Urbanization With An Investment Of US$ 5 Billion.

Arkadag, a US$ 5 billion project, is the latest smart city generating significant global interest. But what makes this city of the future, located in the heart of Turkmenistan, such a grand and important project? Built in honor of a strong leader of the country, Arkadag is not only beautiful but also plays a crucial role in the administrative and economic development of Turkmenistan.

Discover The City Of The Future

Launched in 2018, Arkadag is a city of the future that stands out for both its beauty and its administrative importance.

This ambitious project was conceived to completely rethink the concept of a city, with a focus on ecology and modernity.

The city is designed to offer a wide range of social infrastructures, including kindergartens, urban amusement parks, and various facilities that enhance the daily lives of its inhabitants.

Arkadag covers 130 hectares of industrial properties, primarily for the medical and agri-food sectors, aiming to develop the local economy.

The city also stands out for its high technology, offering an electric transportation network, smart road signage, and connected parking.

A dense fiber optic network has been installed, transforming Arkadag into a digital city, part of Turkmenistan’s new economic development strategy, which now focuses on artificial intelligence.

Despite the promises of modernity, the digitization of Arkadag raises concerns about surveillance and privacy, due to Turkmenistan’s authoritarian reputation.

However, local authorities claim that there will be a democratic component in the city’s management, allowing residents to play an active role in its development.

Arkadag As A Tribute To Gurbanguly Berdimuhammedow

The construction of Arkadag is also a tribute to Gurbanguly Berdimuhammedow, former president of Turkmenistan.

He served as president from 2006 to 2022 and was known for his cult of personality. Arkadag is adorned with monuments in his honor, including a golden statue depicting him on his favorite horse.

This tribute reflects Berdimuhammedow’s strong influence on the city’s construction, which was designed to be the most beautiful, original, and largest in the region.

The city was inaugurated with a grand ceremony, featuring dance performances, horse shows, and fireworks.

Despite the deserted streets and empty buildings, Arkadag opened its doors to the public in a lavish celebration. However, Gurbanguly Berdimuhammedow was not present at the ceremony, as he was in Saudi Arabia for the major Muslim pilgrimage, the Hajj.

Cost Of The Arkadag Project

The construction of Arkadag has a significant cost, estimated at US$ 5 billion. The first phase of construction alone cost about US$ 3.3 billion.

This enormous investment raises questions about the project’s long-term economic viability and whether the Turkmen government is using the country’s resources efficiently.

Arkadag fits into the global trend of urbanization and smart city development.

According to a UN study, it is expected that 68% of the world’s population will live in urban areas by 2050. Cities are reinventing themselves, adopting new technologies to improve quality of life and manage resources more efficiently.

The smart city of Arkadag represents this trend, utilizing innovative solutions to tackle constant changes and enhance urban living.

Ecology is at the center of modern society’s concerns, and Arkadag is no exception.

The city adopts a sustainable development approach, with measures to reduce pollutant emissions and preserve biodiversity.

Efficient water resource management and waste treatment are critical issues that Arkadag plans to address, aligning with global sustainability goals.

Mobility And Transportation

Urban mobility is a growing challenge in modern cities, and Arkadag is committed to a multimodal transportation approach.

The city combines cars, public transportation, and individual mobility solutions, such as cycling and walking.

Digital technologies encourage new ways of sharing resources, making mobility more efficient and sustainable.

Arkadag is an ambitious example of a city of the future, aiming to combine modernity, sustainability, and quality of life.

With significant investment and a tribute to a national leader, the city represents an important step forward in the urbanization of Turkmenistan.

However, economic viability and challenges of surveillance and privacy are issues that still need to be addressed.

As future cities continue to evolve, projects like Arkadag offer a glimpse of what may be to come.
