The New Supersonic Fighter Jet of the Brazilian Air Force Arrived in Brazil This Week. With 14 Meters in Length and Capable of Reaching Speeds of Up to 2,400 km/h, It Is Equipped with Advanced Technologies.

Last Friday (15th), the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) received the F-39 Gripen Supersonic Fighter Jet at the Anápolis Air Base in Goiás. This aircraft, already tested and declared flight-ready, is the seventh of its kind to join the FAB fleet. The F-39 Gripen arrived in Brazil earlier this week, after a journey of approximately 20 days by ship from Sweden. In the early hours of Wednesday (13th), the aircraft was transported from the Port to the Navegantes International Airport in Santa Catarina, where it underwent technical procedures before being delivered to the FAB.

Work at the airport included the installation of the ejection seat and survival kit, fueling, and system checks. On Thursday (14th), a motor test was conducted, which included taxiing on the airport runway.

The takeoff of the newest supersonic fighter jet of the FAB occurred at 10:35 AM. The flight from Navegantes to Anápolis lasted 1 hour and 20 minutes and was flown by a pilot from the Flight Research and Testing Institute (IPEV). The fighter now joins the other aircraft in the First Air Defense Group (1st GDA) – Jaguar Squadron, based at the BAAN.

The Navegantes Operation involved the unloading, movement, and takeoff of the F-39 Gripen registered as FAB 4107. The mission included teams from the Coordinating Committee of the Combat Aircraft Program (COPAC), the Aerospace Operations Command (COMAE), the Aeronautics Logistics Transport Center (CTLA), the Preparedness Command (COMPREP), the Aeronautics Intelligence Center (CIAER), Saab, and the Aeronautical Accident Investigation and Prevention Center (CENIPA).

FAB Takes Another Step Toward Consolidating the Brazil-Sweden Partnership

The operation at the airport also had the support of the Military Police of Santa Catarina (PMSC), the Municipal Guard of Navegantes, the Fire Brigade of Santa Catarina (CBMSC), the Civil Police of Santa Catarina (PCSC), the Municipal Government of Navegantes, the Municipal Foundation of Vigilance and Traffic (NAVETRAN), and the Federal Revenue Service.

According to the coordinator of the Navegantes Operation, Colonel Aviator Leandro Barbosa Ferreira Pinto, from the COPAC staff, the receipt of the seventh serial supersonic fighter represents another step in strengthening the Brazil-Sweden partnership.

According to Barbosa, the new FAB fighter stands out as a driving force for the operational capacity of the Brazilian Air Force in maintaining the sovereignty of our airspace. Recognized for its efficiency, low operating cost, high availability, and advanced technology capacity, the F-39 Gripen represents a qualitative leap for the FAB. The aircraft is equipped with cutting-edge technologies, including the latest systems, weapons, and sensors to conduct missions in hostile environments and complex combat scenarios.

Get to Know the Supersonic Fighter Jet of the FAB Better

The new FAB F-39 Gripen is the frontline vector of the Brazilian Air Force, as the aircraft can carry out air defense, ground attack, and reconnaissance missions.

The fighter operates with various types of armament, both with air-to-air and air-to-ground capability, being able to fly at twice the speed of sound at a maximum altitude of 16,000 meters.

In addition, among the aircraft’s features is its ability to take off and land on short runways, making operations possible with little infrastructure or even on highways if necessary. The reduced refueling time, for rearming and completing technical inspection, promises even more agility, precision, and efficiency for the air defense missions conducted by the FAB. Measuring more than 14 meters, the F-39 exceeds 2,400 km/h and is used by air forces around the world.
