The Strongest Tugboat in the World, Island Victory, Holds the World Record for Continuous Static Towing with 477 Tons, Enabling It for the Most Demanding Offshore Operations, Including Positioning the Largest Oil Rigs.

In the demanding offshore oil and gas sector, strength and capability are crucial. The Island Victory, an Anchor Handling Tug Supply (AHTS) vessel, stands out as the strongest tugboat in the world, registering a continuous static towing force of 477 tons. This power enables it to position and move the largest oil rigs.

Understand the capabilities of Island Victory, the meaning of its strength and how it establishes itself as a global leader in complex offshore operations.

Understanding Continuous Static Towing (Bollard Pull): The Crucial Measure of an AHTS Tug’s Strength

Static Towing (Bollard Pull – BP) is the pulling force exerted by a vessel at zero speed, a vital metric for tugboats and AHTS. It directly indicates the ability to tow and maintain heavy static loads.

It’s crucial to distinguish Continuous Static Towing from Maximum. The continuous, measured for 5 to 10 minutes, is the most relevant value for sustained operations, such as those performed by Island Victory, and the one that truly matters to the industry.

The Raw Power of Island Victory: The World Record of 477 Tons Towing by the Strongest Tugboat in the World

Island Victory confirmed the strongest tugboat in the world! ⚓ With 477t of towing, it moves the largest platforms.

Multiple sources confirm that the continuous static towing of Island Victory is 477 metric tons, a world record. This immense strength is supported by robust specifications. The strongest tugboat in the world measures 123.4 meters in length, 25 meters in beam, and is equipped with two Rolls-Royce Bergen B32:40V16PCD engines, each with 8,000 kW, totaling 16,000 kW (approximately 42,880 hp). This propulsion system, controlled by Kongsberg systems, is crucial for its towing capacity.

Island Victory at the Top of the Ranking of the Most Powerful AHTS

Various sources explicitly state that Island Victory holds the world record for the highest static towing. With its 477 tons, it significantly surpasses other powerful global AHTS, such as the Far Samson (423t) and the Boka Falcon (403t).

This leadership demonstrates the continuous evolution in the design of these vessels, responding to the increasing demands of the offshore industry for greater power and capacity to handle ever-larger installations in more complex locations.

Operational Capacity in Action: Moving the Largest Oil Platforms and Other Offshore Structures

Beyond raw towing, the Island Victory is equipped for large-scale operations. It features a deck area of 1,200 m², an offshore crane with a capacity of 250 tons, two Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) capable of reaching 4,000m depth, and a large moonpool. These attributes make it versatile for various complex tasks.

A notable feat occurred in March 2021, when the Island Victory single-handedly installed eight STEVSHARK REX anchors in the Solveig field, applying a continuous towing force of 440 tons. This event is a concrete demonstration of its capability. The Kongsberg Maritime UT 797 CX design is integral to this multifunctionality, making it a highly effective “installation machine.” Although “the largest oil rigs” is a relative term, the specifications and proven performance of Island Victory strongly support its capacity to handle what would be considered among the largest offshore structures existing.
