The partnership between Itaipu and the university will also focus on the recovery of the Iguatemi River, replanting riparian forests, sedimentation control, reducing erosion, and the bioceanic route, which will authorize the construction of the bridge over the Paraguay River, the governor of the State stated, mentioning the new connection between Carmelo Peralta and Porto Murtinho (MS) in Paraguay, which will also be built with investments from Itaipu Binacional.
Farmers in the Region Will Have Easy Access to Soil Analyses
Ariel Scheffer da Silva, Superintendent of Environmental Management (MA.CD), stated that the soil of the municipality of Mundo Novo has unique characteristics, with a sandy profile and high erosion potential. This can make sediment contribution to the rivers supplying the Itaipu reservoir favorable.
According to Ariel, sandy sediments pose the greatest risk to the reservoir, as they remain at the bottom of the lake, and the current cleaning mechanisms are not very effective and are expensive. Therefore, Itaipu Binacional plans to implement preventive actions to reduce environmental damage caused by sedimentation and increase the reservoir’s lifespan.
The UEMS laboratory will also allow rural producers in the region, especially small ones, to have easy access to low-cost soil analyses to identify sediments such as polluting chemicals and heavy metals. This will result in a better diagnosis of cultivated areas, leading to the rational use of correctives and fertilizers.
Along with Itaipu and UEMS Investments, Agronomy Course Gains Highlight at the University
According to the projects, the soil analysis laboratory will feature state-of-the-art equipment and an area of 332.35 square meters, while the herbarium will have 149.5 m². The expectation is that the works will be completed by the third quarter of 2023.
The manager of Itaipu’s Environmental Action Division, Sergio Angheben, highlighted that the investments will directly assist in the qualification of the Agronomy course at UEMS, which was also announced this Monday, with classes scheduled to begin next year.
