Due To The Large Volume In The Reservoirs, Aneel Keeps The Green Flag In February And Electricity Bills May Continue Without Extra Fees

The National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) announced that Brazilian electricity bills will continue without additional charges in February. Thanks to the improvement in the volume of water in the hydropower reservoirs, the green tariff flag will be maintained for the third consecutive month, providing relief for consumers.

Full Reservoirs And Cheaper Energy

In recent months, the heavy rains in November, December, and January significantly increased the volume of water stored in the hydropower plants.

This reduces the need to activate thermal power plants, which have higher generation costs and directly impact the price of electricity.

According to Aneel, this positive scenario directly reflects in the maintenance of the green flag, allowing electricity bills not to undergo additional adjustments.

“Conditions remain favorable, and if the rainfall forecast continues as expected, we could have a year in 2025 without extra charges on electricity bills,” said Aneel’s director-general, Sandoval Feitosa.

Impact Of Tariffs On Electricity Bills Throughout 2024

The year 2024 experienced periods of extra charges due to drought, resulting in the activation of the yellow and red tariff flags between July and November.

However, with the recovery of the reservoirs, the extra fee has been suspended since December.

The maintenance of the green flag indicates stability for consumers, who are already facing challenges with the high cost of electricity in the country.

Understand The Tariff Flag System

Created by Aneel, the tariff flag system aims to inform consumers about the conditions of electricity generation and its impact on electricity bills.

The model works as follows:

Green Flag: Favorable conditions, with no increase in the tariff;

Yellow Flag: Moderate increase in the electricity bill due to higher generation costs;

Red Flag – Level 1 And 2: Indicates high costs for electricity generation, reflecting a significant increase in the tariff.

What To Expect In The Coming Months?

Despite the current good conditions, Aneel warns that the maintenance of the green flag will depend on the levels of the reservoirs in the coming months, especially during the dry season.

If the volume of rain decreases drastically, there may be a need to activate thermal power plants, raising electricity generation costs.

For now, consumers can take advantage of the period without extra fees on their electricity bills and adopt practices for conscious energy consumption, ensuring savings and sustainability in the long term.
