ContourGlobal Launches Operations of Black Hollow Sun I, a 185 MWp Solar Power Plant in Colorado, Expanding Access to Solar Energy in the U.S.

ContourGlobal officially announced on Friday (12) the start of operations of Black Hollow Sun I, its first solar power plant on U.S. soil. Located in Weld County, near the town of Severance, Colorado, the new solar plant has a installed capacity of 185 MWp and is already supplying clean energy to Platte River Power Authority.

This milestone represents not only the company’s debut in the renewable energy sector in the United States, but also a strategic step towards expanding the sustainable energy matrix in the country. The launch of Black Hollow Sun I reinforces ContourGlobal’s commitment to decarbonization and strengthening local communities.

Technical Data of the New Black Hollow Sun I Solar Power Plant

Black Hollow Sun I is a large-scale solar photovoltaic plant, with a installed capacity of 185 megawatts-peak (MWp). The estimated annual production is 608 gigawatt-hours (GWh), enough to supply over 73,000 homes with clean and renewable solar energy.

The operation of the plant will avoid the emission of approximately 450,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO₂) per year, directly contributing to the climate goals of the state of Colorado and the United States. During its construction, around 450 direct jobs and 250 indirect jobs were generated, boosting the local economy and strengthening the regional production chain.

Project Development and Technology Used

The Black Hollow Sun I project was originally developed by Hanwha Renewables and acquired by ContourGlobal in early 2025. The plant utilizes high-efficiency solar modules manufactured by Qcells, a U.S. company specializing in photovoltaic solutions. In addition to the modules, Qcells was also responsible for the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of the project.

The choice of Qcells technology reinforces ContourGlobal’s strategy to invest in local and sustainable solutions. The integration between phases I and II of the complex allows for shared infrastructure, optimizing land use and increasing technical and operational efficiency.

The second phase of the project, called Black Hollow Sun II, is already under development and is expected to be operational by the end of 2026. With this, the solar complex will reach an installed capacity of 324 MWp, making it the largest solar installation in northern Colorado.

Environmental and Social Impacts of the Solar Power Plant

The new solar plant represents a significant advance in the energy transition of the region. In addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the project promotes direct benefits to the local economy. The construction phase involved contractors, suppliers, and service providers from the area, generating jobs and stimulating socioeconomic development.

ContourGlobal has also been active in the community, supporting local events such as the Severance Days Festival, held in August 2025. The company’s presence strengthens the bond with residents and reinforces its role as a social transformation agent.

Moreover, the plant was designed with strict sustainability criteria, respecting local biodiversity and adopting environmental mitigation practices. The project includes preservation areas and ecological corridors, ensuring coexistence between energy infrastructure and the environment.

Expansion of ContourGlobal’s Renewable Portfolio in the U.S.

With the operational launch of Black Hollow Sun I, the renewable capacity of ContourGlobal in the United States has increased by 185 MWp. Currently, the company’s portfolio in the country totals 2.8 gigawatts (GW) in operation, construction, or advanced development.

The company plans to add over 1 GW in solar energy and 300 MW in battery energy storage systems (BESS), consolidating its position as an independent power producer (IPP) focused on clean sources. The company’s strategy includes technological and geographical diversification, with projects in different states and regions.

Black Hollow Sun I is an example of how ContourGlobal is aligned with decarbonization goals and the growing demand for renewable energy in the United States. The project also reinforces the company’s competitiveness in the global clean energy market.

Profile of ContourGlobal and International Operations

Founded two decades ago, ContourGlobal is a company controlled by investment manager KKR. Under the leadership of CEO Antonio Cammisecra, the company currently operates in 18 countries, with a portfolio of 5.3 GW of installed capacity across various generation and storage technologies.

The company’s mission is to accelerate the energy transition through investments in renewable sources, repowering existing assets, and developing new sustainable projects. The inauguration of Black Hollow Sun I symbolizes this ongoing effort towards a cleaner, more resilient, and decentralized future.

In addition to the United States, ContourGlobal has significant operations in Europe, Latin America, and Africa, with a focus on solar, wind, hydroelectric, and high-efficiency thermal projects. The company also invests in innovation and digitalization, seeking smart solutions to optimize the management of its assets.

Solar Energy as a Vector for Economic and Environmental Transformation

The launch of Black Hollow Sun I marks a historic moment for ContourGlobal and the solar energy sector in the United States. With robust capacity, positive environmental impact, and job creation, the new solar plant represents a model for sustainable and collaborative development.

By investing in domestic technology, strengthening local communities, and expanding its renewable portfolio, ContourGlobal reaffirms its role as a protagonist in the global energy transition. Black Hollow Sun I is not just a photovoltaic plant — it is a symbol of innovation, commitment, and the future.

The project also demonstrates how solar energy can be a vector for economic, environmental, and social transformation. By combining technical efficiency, environmental responsibility, and community engagement, Black Hollow Sun I sets a new standard for projects in the sector.

With planned expansions in the coming years, including the construction of Black Hollow Sun II, ContourGlobal’s solar complex in Colorado is set to become a global reference in clean energy generation. The initiative contributes to the energy security of the United States and helps meet global climate targets.

The solar plant inaugurated in September 2025 is, therefore, more than an infrastructure project: it is a concrete response to the challenges of the 21st century. And by all indications, it is just the beginning of a new era for ContourGlobal and the future of renewable energy.
