Final text of COP28 calls on countries for a just transition to reduce net-zero emissions and gradually eliminate fossil fuels.
The 28th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP28) concluded its work, reinforcing the need for a transition away from fossil fuels in energy systems. The urgency of this transition was highlighted, aiming to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, according to climate science.
Despite fears that the agenda of the oil dominated the COP, the conference saw progress in calling for a transition from oil, gas and coal to sources with less impact on the global climate. This change is crucial for tackling climate change and ensuring a sustainable future for future generations.

COP29 will focus on defining the means of implementing what was indicated in the GST, which should be reflected in the updates to the NDCs (climate contributions defined individually by each country) to be presented at COP30.
Marina Silva emphasizes the foundations for moving towards a just transition
'We still don't have clarity about the translation of a just transition, where developed countries, in the logic of the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities, take the lead. But we believe that we have the foundations here to advance something that 31 years ago was not in the right dimension', commented Marina Silva at the press conference.
