Final Text of COP28 Calls on Countries for Just Transition to Achieve Net Zero Emissions and Gradual Phasing Out of Fossil Fuels.

The 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) has concluded its work, reinforcing the need for a transition away from fossil fuels in energy systems. The urgency of this transition was highlighted, aiming to reach net zero emissions by 2050, according to climate science.

Despite concerns that the oil agenda would dominate COP, the conference noted progress in the call for the transition away from oil, gas, and coal to sources with lesser impact on global climate. This change is crucial for addressing climate change and ensuring a sustainable future for coming generations.

COP29 Focused on Implementing Measures Indicated in Global Stocktake

COP29 will focus on defining the means of implementing what was indicated in the GST, which should be reflected in the updates of the NDCs (nationally determined climate contributions) to be presented at COP30.

Marina Silva Emphasizes the Foundations for Progressing Toward a Just Transition

‘We still don’t have clarity on translating a just transition, where developed countries, in the logic of the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities, take the lead. But we believe that we have the foundations here to advance something that has not been properly addressed for 31 years’, commented Marina Silva at the press conference.
