Copel Wants to Build Photovoltaic Plants in Areas Where It Already Has Installed Wind Farms, Utilizing Infrastructure and Other Synergies
The Paranaense Energy Company – Copel, wants to acquire larger assets and use the infrastructure and other synergies of locations with wind farms to install photovoltaic plants. Cássio Santana da Silva, the company’s business development director, states that the project aims to enable mixed construction and defines actions as a priority for the company.

Mix of Photovoltaic Plants and Wind Farms from Copel
The innovation is consistent with Copel’s other actions for renewable resource generation. On March 1st, the first three units of the Bandeirantes Photovoltaic Plant were put into operation in the north of Paraná state, and the other three units are expected to come online later this year, with a total installed capacity of 5.36 MWp, enough to power approximately 10,000 people.
Cássio says, “Copel has a modest participation in solar; we inaugurated a 5-megawatt project this year. And we really want, after starting to operate and test an asset, to take bigger steps.”

Acquisition of New Assets by Copel
Currently evaluating acquisition opportunities for assets, mainly in Rio Grande do Norte or Paraná, prioritizing projects for operational energy generation or that already have future product sale contracts, such as photovoltaic plants with a capacity greater than 100 MW and wind farms with more than 150 megawatts.
The implementation of the hybrid structure requires oversight, a matter discussed by the National Electricity Agency (Aneel). According to this entity, the definition of rules should encourage this construction and allow for the optimization of the transmission system’s use.
