The Purchase of the Hydroelectric Plants, Which Had No Disclosed Value, Will Allow CSN to Focus on Investments in the Renewable Energy Sector

As announced by the Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional – which in January expanded its domestic and international sales –, or simply CSN, on April 8, Friday, its two subsidiaries CSN Cimentos and CSN Energia celebrated the signing of an agreement with Brookfield Americas Infrastructure (Brazil Power) regarding the acquisition of 100% of Santa Ana Energética, which holds the grant for the exploration of the Small Hydroelectric Plant Santa Ana (PCH Santa Ana), the Small Hydroelectric Plant SacreII (PCH Sacre), Topázio Energética, and, indirectly, Brasil Central Energia (BCE).

According to a statement from the companies published by Giovana Leal in a piece for the online news channel Money Times, considering the estimated growing electricity consumption by CSN Cimentos in the coming years due to new purchases and medium- to long-term project development, the acquisition of the PCH hydroelectric plants aims primarily to support and strengthen CSN’s business expansion plans through investments in the renewable energy sector – which is very promising for Brazil – and energy self-generation to enhance the competitiveness of its businesses.

Among other suspensive conditions, the closing of the operation still depends on approval from competition and regulatory authorities, CSN reported in conclusion. The value of the hydroelectric plants purchase was not disclosed.

Meet the Giant CSN

Founded in April 1941, CSN was the first integrated producer of flat steel in Brazil, marking a milestone in the country’s industrialization process. Privatized in 1993, the company has been updating itself in the market and diversifying its operations. Thus, it is one of the most efficient integrated steelmaking complexes in the world, prominently operating in five sectors: steel, mining, logistics, cement, and energy.

Additionally, CSN has a sustainability vision that enhances industrial process efficiency and establishes gains through the circular economy, bringing benefits to all involved in this value generation chain. The company has a management focus on developing its teams and harmonious coexistence with communities in the cities where it operates, in Brazil – where it is present in 18 states – and abroad.

Solar Energy, Which Has Already Contributed R$ 75 Billion to Brazil, Can Replace Hydroelectric Power in the National Energy Matrix, According to Absolar

On March 30, Wednesday, the Brazilian Association of Photovoltaic Solar Energy (Absolar), which represents the solar energy sector in the country, held the election for the Board of Directors for the years 2022 to 2026. Ronaldo Koloszuk will be the president of the Association for another four-year term.

Ronaldo stated to the news outlet Exame that the reelection is evidence of the confidence that members place in his team. During his time at the helm of Absolar’s board, Koloszuk observed the solar energy sector grow significantly. Just in March, the source reached 14 gigawatts of operational capacity, thus surpassing the Itaipu plant, which corresponds to the largest hydroelectric plant in Brazil. Since 2012, when solar energy gained more national prominence, this renewable source has brought nearly R$ 75 billion in investments, in addition to generating 420,000 jobs.

For the Absolar executive, solar energy is attractive in terms of economic and technological factors. “With a day’s installation, the customer can achieve a reduction of up to 90% on their electricity bill. In three years, the investment pays off,” explains Koloszuk. Interested? Complete the reading of this article by clicking this link. Here at CPG, you can check news from CSN and many other companies.
