The number of job vacancies opened by companies in Brazil is growing. Only in the first semester of this year, more than 1.5 million new job vacancies were opened, according to data from the General Register of Employees and Unemployed (Caged). However, companies have encountered difficulties in filling certain positions due to the lack of professionals with mastery of a fundamental discipline: communication, which has become the most valued skill by companies during the pandemic, according to a global survey by LinkedIn.

Currently, with a large part of companies working in a home office (remote) or hybrid model, it has become clear that the skills examined in candidates are not only the technical knowledge of the field but also the socio-emotional competencies, such as good interpersonal communication, the ability to speak with clarity, objectivity, and emotional intelligence.
Communication Has Been a Challenge for Professionals to Secure the Coveted Job
However, communication has been a challenge and often becomes a barrier for professionals to secure the coveted job or even remain in the job market. A survey by the magazine Você S/A, published by Abril, analyzed the reasons for dismissals from some of the country’s leading companies and showed that 87% of employees were dismissed due to the lack of socio-emotional skills, such as inadequate communication. Only 13% of professionals were fired due to the lack of technical competence for the position.

A recent survey commissioned by Global Line, a Brazilian company specialized in training and consulting, showed that among the challenges in remote work identified by professionals in large companies are communication, building trust, constant feedback, socialization, leadership, common goals, and cultivating friendships.
All of these depend directly on the ability to listen and be understood. “It is proven that public speaking is an indispensable and valued skill for the corporate market, regardless of the professional’s field of action. However, this is not a competence taught and developed in traditional educational methods,” comments Hendel Favarin, co-founder of Conquer, a school of business in the new economy.
Knowing How to Communicate Adequately Has Become an Important Prerequisite for Entering the Job Market
Knowing how to communicate adequately has become an important prerequisite for organizations. However, most professionals, whether they are at the beginning of their careers or already holding managerial positions, report difficulties in establishing assertive communication based on organizing ideas, clarity of their own opinions, and objectivity.
According to a study conducted by About.com, a data company, the three main reasons people dislike their jobs are related to communication, such as lack of management direction, absence of communication among the team, and constant changes that are not communicated internally in the best way. “Therefore, among the benefits of public speaking are: becoming more persuasive, influential, conveying ideas and projects confidently, reaching all levels of your company in an assertive and cohesive manner. The ability to communicate effectively also promotes self-awareness, emotional control, improvement in presentations, and mastery of body language tools. Thus, knowing how to communicate takes the professional even further, thanks to the ability to be understood clearly and directly,” says Favarin.
Public speaking, the skill of speaking well in public by applying techniques that enhance how information is conveyed, can and should be developed by all professionals. “We know that countless people are afraid and/or have difficulty speaking in public, expressing their opinions, and even defending their ideas during a work meeting or interviews. Therefore, it is essential to seek courses that assist in the learning process, using tools and technical tips to apply assertive communication in daily life,” emphasizes the CEO.
According to Favarin, some points of attention for good public speaking include controlling nervousness, developing body awareness, and maintaining a posture that ranges from tone of voice to coherent facial expressions. “In communication, everything matters. And by learning to communicate effectively, the professional will become more influential, will notice a greater presence when presenting, capturing the attention of all participants, will develop their confidence, exuding more credibility, and will create engaging and high-impact speeches and presentations,” concludes Favarin.
