PAHO Offers Free Courses to Train Health Professionals in Immunization. The Initiative Aims to Strengthen Competencies in Vaccination, Especially for Those Working in Primary Care and for New Professionals in the Field.
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), has launched four free courses on the Virtual Campus, aimed at health professionals and students in the field. These courses are part of the Special Program for Comprehensive Immunization (CIM) and were created to train both new entrants and experienced professionals. With a technical and practical approach, the courses cover everything from basic concepts in immunization to surveillance and management of vaccination programs, providing essential knowledge to improve immunization practices in the region’s countries. Vaccination, an achievement that has saved millions of lives over the decades, remains one of the pillars of public health, particularly in combating diseases such as measles, tuberculosis, and polio.
The role of health professionals, especially nurses and nursing technicians, is crucial for the success of vaccination programs. In Brazil, the National Immunization Program (NIP) is a world reference and administers over 300 million vaccine doses per year, including 18 different types offered free of charge. With these courses, PAHO seeks to update and empower these professionals to further strengthen vaccination campaigns and service delivery to the population.

The Importance of Nursing in Vaccination
Vaccination represents one of the greatest advances in medicine, contributing to a significant reduction in diseases and infant mortality. To give you an idea, in the 1940s and 1960s, about a thousand children developed polio every day. Diseases such as smallpox, measles, and diphtheria were common and fatal for many people. In Brazil, the infant mortality rate reached 212 deaths per thousand children in the 1940s, while today, thanks to vaccination, that number is much lower.
Nursing professionals play a fundamental role in the success of vaccination, being responsible for administering doses, raising public awareness, and maintaining vaccination rooms. Currently, over 193,000 nurses and technicians work in more than 38,000 vaccination rooms across Brazil, and this number is only expected to grow. With the technical support offered by PAHO’s free courses, these professionals will be able to improve their practices and provide even more qualified service to the population.
