About Samarco
Samarco Mineração is a Brazilian mining company founded in 1977 and is currently controlled through a joint venture between Vale S.A. and the Anglo-Australian BHP Billiton, both holding 50% of the company’s shares. The area had its concession transferred from the Trindade Mining Company (Samitri) to Samarco.
On November 5, 2015, Samarco gained worldwide attention after being the protagonist in the largest environmental disaster recorded in Brazil at that time: the bursting of the dam in the city of Bento Rodrigues. The tailings dams were part of the Germano Mine, which is part of the so-called Alegria Complex, located in the district of Santa Rita Durão in the municipality of Mariana, in the state of Minas Gerais.
