A Disappearance During An International Trip Ended Months Later With An Unexpected Reunion In Southern France, Involving Cross-Border Movement, Frustrated Searches And The Decisive Identification Of A Pet Through Permanent Technology.
A cat that disappeared during a stop on a highway in Catalonia, Spain, was found months later near home, in southern France, after an estimated 250 kilometers of travel, in a case reported by the portal Cães & Gatos.
The reunion with the owners only occurred because the animal had a microchip, scanned at a veterinary clinic, which allowed for identification and locating the family.
Filou, a black and white cat belonging to the French couple Patrick and Evelyne Sire, disappeared on the night of August 9, 2025, when they were returning from vacation in the Ebro Delta, on the Spanish coast.

They were traveling in a motorhome towards Olonzac, in southern France, and stopped to refuel at a gas station in the Maçanet de la Selva area, in Catalonia.
During this stop, a window of the vehicle was left ajar.
According to the owners’ account, this was likely the moment when the cat slipped out unnoticed.
Disappearance Of The Cat During Stop On The Road
After resuming their journey, Patrick and Evelyne initially thought Filou was just hiding inside the motorhome, a behavior the animal had displayed before.
The absence was only confirmed hours later, while still in French territory, when the couple stopped near the Lago de Jouarres, in the Aude department.
The next morning, they checked the interior of the vehicle again, called for the cat, and searched the most common compartments.
Having found nothing, they decided to start a search.
The couple returned to the route taken the previous night and went back to the gas station in Spain, in an attempt to locate the animal.
Additionally, they contacted a regional animal protection association and reported the disappearance to the Spanish authorities.
Despite their efforts, there was no confirmed information about Filou’s whereabouts at that time.
Searches, Sighting And Lack Of Confirmation
On August 19, 2025, a report emerged about a black and white cat spotted near the area where Filou had last been seen.
Based on this information, Patrick and Evelyne returned to the site and spent the night trying to locate the animal.
Despite their efforts, the couple could not confirm it was Filou.
In the following days, they received images of other cats with similar characteristics, but none matched the missing animal.
Without concrete new leads, the searches lost intensity over the following months.
Meanwhile, the family’s routine in Olonzac continued without the cat.
As time passed and reliable information became scarcer, the owners began to consider the possibility of not finding him again.
Reunion Of The Cat Months Later In Southern France
The situation changed on January 9, 2026, when a resident of Homps, a village near Olonzac, contacted the couple.
According to her, a cat had appeared alone weeks earlier, in a state of emaciation and showing signs of physical wear.
Given the circumstances, the resident took the animal to a veterinarian for evaluation.
During the examination, the microchip was scanned, revealing the identification details linked to Patrick and Evelyne Sire.
Although the registered phone numbers were no longer active, the address allowed the tutors to be located.
After being notified, Patrick went to Homps and recognized the animal as Filou.
According to the couple, the cat was thinner but showed no evident signs of serious health problems at the time of reunion.
The location where Filou was found is about one kilometer, in a straight line, from the tutors’ home.
Microchip And The Identification Of The Animal

There is no confirmed information about the route taken by Filou between Catalonia and southern France, nor about the actual time spent during this journey.
The estimate of 250 kilometers corresponds to the approximate distance between Maçanet de la Selva, the point where the cat is believed to have gone missing, and the region of Olonzac and Homps, where he was located.
There are also no records indicating which places the animal passed through during the months he was missing.
What can be stated, based on the available accounts, is the sequence of events: the escape during a stop on the road, the initial search attempts, and the subsequent identification through the microchip.
Animal behavior specialists explain that cats have a developed spatial and sensory memory, which can help them navigate using smells, sounds, and visual cues.
Still, without specific data on Filou’s route, it’s impossible to assert how he managed to travel through different regions and cross an international border.
