The Iron-Air Battery from From Energy May Be the Key to More Efficient and Long-Lasting Energy Storage in Large Renewable Installations

One of the main conflicts that the renewable energy world faces today is storing the large amounts of energy produced day after day. Now, an innovative project promises to solve these complexities by offering a new battery with unprecedented storage capacity that could significantly benefit the sector.

The Solution to One of the Biggest Problems Related to Renewable Energy Generation

It is important to remember that the energy transition being experienced worldwide has led hundreds of scientists and researchers to think of new ways to generate energy in more efficient and environmentally friendly ways; however, it is also necessary to find a solution to significant energy losses during periods when energy demand is low.

To address this significant problem, a U.S. company called From Energy has begun working on an innovative battery with enough capacity to store energy for long periods, thereby preventing energy generated in large photovoltaic fields or wind farms from being wasted during periods of lower demand.

The project in question is known as the multi-day iron-air battery, which would have a storage time exceeding all others. We are talking about a battery with a capacity of 85 MW and 8.5 GWh, meaning it can provide 85 MW of power continuously for up to 100 hours. The most impressive aspect is that it will be the largest capacity battery in the world.

What Is This Promising Project Based On?

Before explaining how this innovation works, it is important to mention that it was the U.S. Department of Energy that provided the multimillion-dollar funding for this project to be developed; we are talking about a total of $389 million for the Power Up New England project, which seeks 4.8 GW of energy from offshore wind generators.

To store the amount of energy this project aims to capture, the iron-air battery may be the best option for storing the energy obtained from these offshore wind generators for a long time, increasing the energy supply and extending the good performance in cases of higher electricity demand.

This innovative battery system would be installed in an old paper mill located in Maine, with an impressive power capacity of 85 MW and a storage capacity of 8,500 MWh. To carry out this project, From Energy would need the substantial sum of $147 million to create this promising iron-air battery.

What Is the From Energy Battery Made Up Of?

First of all, this battery utilizes the principle of reversible oxidation, meaning that the battery can be charged by receiving electric current that then converts rust into iron, generating oxygen as a byproduct. On the other hand, we can consider that this battery. To discharge, the battery draws oxygen from the air, converting iron into rust.

It is important to mention that each individual module includes air and iron electrodes, which allow for the electrochemical reactions mentioned above and function to store and discharge electricity. These mentioned modules can be grouped together, creating modular energy blocks on a megawatt scale.

The development of the multi-day iron-air battery by From Energy represents a significant advancement in the field of renewable energies. This technology not only promises to solve one of the major challenges in the sector, which is long-term energy storage, but it may also change the energy landscape by offering an effective solution to prevent energy waste.
