Offering Free Professional Training for Brazilian Women, Neoenergia Electricians School Opens Opportunities in the Electric Sector and Helps to Pave the Way for Gender Equality
Acting for gender equality is a commitment of Neoenergia, with the goal of contributing to sustainable development. The Electricians School, an initiative that promotes free training for residents of the company’s concession areas, is one of the tools to encourage the growth of the number of women in the electric sector, a profession predominantly occupied by men.

More Than 300 Women Graduated by Neoenergia
Since 2017, 384 women have graduated from the Electricians School in mixed and all-women classes— the latter promoted by Neoenergia Coelba (BA) and Neoenergia Pernambuco (PE) in an initiative recognized as a global example of one of the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs) by WeEmpower, a UN Women program in collaboration with the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the European Union to promote best practices among companies. In total, 268 of these students were hired, with the same salaries and benefits as men.

Joyce Marques, 24, entered the Electricians School in 2016 when she was 18. Today, she works in the standby teams of Neoenergia Pernambuco. She can already see a change in the scenario, which is now more favorable for women.
“The integration within the company makes you feel more at ease, facilitating the entire process. I see that even the workplace has changed, with a larger locker room for women,” she reports. “The presence of women is already very natural in the company. The ideal is to show that all women can be where they want. Before, it was a male area, and now we have live-line female electricians in transmission. Slowly, we are showing that we can work in areas that many people never expected.”
More Than 50 Women in Training at Neoenergia Electricians School and Prepared to Work in the Electric Sector in 2022
Another 54 women are in training across 14 classes started in 2022, spread across four states and the Federal District. In addition to Bahia and Pernambuco, the initiative is being carried out by Neoenergia Cosern (RN), Neoenergia Elektro (SP), and Neoenergia Brasília (DF). The company has been working to increasingly expand the participation of women in the project. One example is one of the classes currently in progress in partnership with the National Service for Industrial Training (Senai) of the Federal District, where the participation of women reaches 58%. In Mossoró and Natal, in Rio Grande do Norte, the percentages are 42% and 33%, respectively.
Thawanny Souza Gomes, 28, is one of the students benefited by the initiative at Neoenergia Brasília this year. For her, who is in training, the initiative is not only a way to offer training and job opportunities but also to contribute to gender equality. “The Electricians School generates interest among women in this area. Women see other women doing it and realize they are capable of executing the task. It’s an encouragement for women to see that the sector is not exclusively for men,” she opines.
“I think it is important, especially for the empowerment of women,” agrees Clécia Maria Bezerra dos Santos, 34, a graduate of the Neoenergia Cosern initiative in February. “Some people laugh, but I’ve never bowed my head to that. Many still think that women cannot be electricians; every step I take is a great achievement. I want to start working, grow, and take other courses.”
