Discover The Ten Largest Wind Turbine Structures Ever Produced

The Largest Wind Turbines Are Here! We’ve Compiled a List of the Largest Wind Generators and Turbines.

Investments in wind power plants have expanded in recent years, as this is a great path towards sustainability through electricity generation. However, at the same time, it has been necessary to develop projects for larger and more powerful wind turbines, given that the larger the system, the more sustainable the generated energy will be. This was confirmed, for example, by scientists from Switzerland and the Netherlands through the Institute of Environmental Engineering at ETH Zurich. Therefore, we have put together a list of the ten largest wind turbines currently manufactured.

1. Haliade-X

The subsidiary of the giant General Electric, GE Renewable Energy, developed the Haliade-X, the largest wind turbine in the world, measuring 107 meters in length and 260 meters in height, with a capacity to generate 12 MW with its prototype installed in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

2. Vestas V164

Vestas V164 – Disclosure/SPM Marine Offshore

This model, produced in Denmark and the United Kingdom, has been continually expanded and currently has a generation capacity of 9.5 MW, with a diameter of 164 meters. Its main feature is its 80-meter long blade and a very lightweight nacelle.

3. Adwen AD-180

Generated by Areva and Gamesa, this wind generator features an 88.4-meter blade and a diameter of 180 meters, in addition to providing 8 MW of power. Its major highlight is the design and length of its blade.

4. SWT-8.0-154

SWT-8.0-154 – Disclosure/Siemens

The SWT-8.0-154 model, produced in Denmark, has a diameter of 120 meters, which can be extended to up to 154 meters, with a capacity to provide 8 MW of power.

5. Enercon E-126

This wind turbine model, from Enercon, was initially developed for a 6 MW machine, featuring a rotor diameter of 127 meters and a production capacity of 7.5 MW, with the company’s representatives believing it could achieve much more.

6. MHI Sea Angel

MHI Sea Angel – Disclosure/Mitsubishi

This wind turbine, also known as Sea Angel, was installed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) at the Hunterston Test Center in Scotland, followed by installation off the coast of Japan near Fukushima, on a floating base.

7. Samsung S7.0 171

Samsung S7.0 171 – Disclosure

This wind generator is one of the most innovative seen in the offshore market. Set to be installed in Scotland, its blades measure 85 meters. Additionally, it features a rotor with a diameter of 171.2 meters.

8. Ming Yang 6.5 MW SCD

This turbine design project is the result of a nearly century-long agreement between Ming Yang and Aerodyn. The first prototype, with a rotor diameter of 130 meters and a production capacity of 6.5 MW, was installed in China a few years ago. There are plans for a variation of the model for 8 MW, with a rotor diameter of 168 meters.

9. Senvion 6M

From the Senvion and Repower brands, this turbine was developed for a power of 5 MW with a rotor diameter of 126, but has been expanded to 6.15 MW with a rotor diameter of 152, making it possible to be installed in areas with lower wind intensity. Notably, the first model was installed in the North Sea and the Irish Sea.

10. GE Haliade 6MW

GE Haliade 6MW – Disclosure/General Electric

Last but not least, this wind generator model was developed by Alstom, with the blades created by LM Wind Power, for Block Island, USA, the first offshore wind farm in America. The turbine has blades measuring 73.5 meters and a rotor diameter of 150.8 meters.
