Egypt Plans to Inaugurate One of the Largest Green Hydrogen Production Facilities. A Total of US$ 8 Billion Will Be Invested in the Construction of the Clean Energy Plant of the Future.
The Prime Minister of Egypt, Mostafa Madbouly, was present at the signing ceremony of a memorandum of understanding to begin research for the installation of a plant that will produce green hydrogen. The facility will be located in the Suez Canal Economic Zone and will receive investments of approximately US$ 8 billion for clean energy generation.
Green Hydrogen Plant in Egypt Will Have Capacity to Produce 220 Thousand Tons Annually
The projection is that the future green hydrogen unit will reach a production of 220 thousand tons per year. The project is expected to involve Egyptian government agencies such as the General Authority of the Suez Canal Economic Zone and the Authority for Clean and Renewable Energy, the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company, and the Sovereign Fund of Egypt, in partnership with Renew Power, one of India’s leading clean energy companies.
According to the memorandum of understanding, the Indian company will initially develop a Green Hydrogen plant with a capacity of 20 thousand tons per year, which can be expanded with clean energy sources. The project is scheduled to be built in phases, where the first phase will be to produce green hydrogen through a 150 MW electrolyzer, equipped with 570 MW of clean energy to produce 100 thousand tons per year of green ammonia.

Research indicates that Brazilians support clean energy and wish to advance in the energy transition, but reject paying more on their electricity bill, showing a direct conflict between cost and sustainability.
In the second phase, production in Egypt will be expanded, and this time, the electrolyzer will have a capacity of 1.5 GW, equipped with 5.68 GW of renewable energy, to generate 1 million tons of green ammonia per year. At this stage, the goal is for the green hydrogen plant to reach a capacity of 220 thousand tons per year of clean energy.
Egyptian Entities Speak Out About Green Hydrogen Plant
According to Mohamed Shaker, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy of Egypt, the locations for clean energy production will be determined by the Authority for Clean and Renewable Energy in accordance with existing rules, procedures, and regulations, and the amount of energy generated will be transferred through Egypt’s electricity grid.
The minister also stated that the country has a significant abundance of solar and wind energy production resources and is a promising market to become a global force in the clean energy value chain.
According to the President of the General Authority of the Suez Canal Economic Zone, Yahya Zaki, efforts are being made by the authority with all government agencies involved in the transition to a sustainable economy. Zaki specifically mentioned green hydrogen and green ammonia projects, as well as Egypt’s hosting of the Climate Change Summit in November.
Egypt to Host United Nations Climate Change Conference
Zaki also pointed out memorandums of understanding signed with alliances and international companies to establish sustainable fuels industry projects focused on export and clean fuel supply services.
The engineer stated that the Suez Canal Economic Zone seeks to cooperate with India in the field of green hydrogen.
Thus, the institution is making progress with the signing of memorandums of understanding, some of which are expected to take effect at the same time, as Egypt will host this year’s United Nations Climate Change Conference, which will be held in Sharm El-Sheikh.
