Eletronuclear received credit approval of more than 700 million reais to resume work on the Angra 3 nuclear power plant.

Eletronuclear says that by 2021 it wants to have something tangible to demonstrate to the public the progress of the Angra 3 nuclear power plant. Eletrobras is also part of the efforts to resume work on the nuclear power plant.

According to the government, the value of the credit released to Eletrobras refers to the fact that the state-owned company assumed large debts when deciding to take over the Angra 3 plant, so the loan will serve not only to settle these debts, but also to resolve fiscal issues with Ibama. which recently barred the start of works on the Nuclear power plant until the fine is paid.

With the decision left at the mercy of Eletrobras, the expectation is that the work on the Angra 3 Nuclear Power Plant will begin by October of next year (2021).

The government plans to start the second phase of the works in the middle of 2022 after hiring a company through an EPC – engineering, supply and construction contract – to complete Angra 3.

Angra 3 will be the third power plant of the Almirante Álvaro Alberto Nuclear Center (CNAAA), located on Itaorna beach, in Angra dos Reis (RJ). When it enters into commercial operation, the new unit with a capacity of 1.405 megawatts, will be able to generate more than 12 million megawatt-hours per year, enough energy to supply the cities of Brasília and Belo Horizonte during the same period. With Angra 3, nuclear energy will generate the equivalent of 50% of consumption in the State of Rio de Janeiro.

Angra 3 is the twin sister of Angra 2. Both rely on German Siemens/KWU technology (now Areva ANP). The Unit's construction stages include civil works, electromechanical assembly, commissioning of equipment and systems and operational tests.
