Eletrobras Has Defined That It Will Inject R$ 3.5 Billion in the Resumption of Works at the Nuclear Power Plant
The Angra 3 plant, which has been inactive for 30 years, has a series of pending issues to be resolved, including political ones related to the privatization process of the system. The Federal Court of Accounts is analyzing the plan to resume the project. The decision to continue with the plant is based on the high cost that abandoning it would represent. Eletrobras estimates that abandoning the project would result in a bill of R$ 12 billion in financing already received and contracts with suppliers.

Eletrobras Wants to Resume Work and Put the Angra 3 Nuclear Power Plant into Operation
The corporate structure involving Eletrobras’ capitalization is not a concern for the company’s majority shareholder. The only glaring concern is to change the way energy from Angra 3 is contracted, as the current contract provides for the use of standby energy, which alters the character of hydroelectric energy and increases the GSF indicator – Generation Scaling Factor in English, which corresponds to the ratio between the volume of energy generated by the plants and their physical guarantee.

About the Angra 3 Plant
Angra 3 will be the third plant of the Almirante Álvaro Alberto Nuclear Power Plant (CNAAA), located on the beach of Itaorna, in Angra dos Reis (RJ). When it begins commercial operation, the new unit with a capacity of 1,405 megawatts will be capable of generating more than 12 million megawatt-hours per year, enough energy to supply the cities of Brasília and Belo Horizonte during the same period.
With Angra 3, nuclear energy will generate the equivalent of 50% of the consumption of the State of Rio de Janeiro. Angra 3 is a twin sister of Angra 2. Both utilize German Siemens/KWU technology (now Areva ANP).
The construction stages of the Unit include civil works, electromechanical assembly, commissioning of equipment and systems, and operational testing.
