Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, assures that the introduction of the new manganese battery represents a revolutionary milestone in the electric vehicle industry. This innovative technology, which incorporates manganese in the cathode – the positive electrode – of lithium-ion batteries, promises to offer a more economical and environmentally friendly alternative. In addition to enhancing performance, safety, and sustainability, the use of manganese in batteries is an approach that Musk has been advocating for years, aiming to optimize energy efficiency and the durability of electric cars.

In Berlin, at the inauguration of the Tesla GigaFactory, Musk highlighted the potential of manganese and mentioned that Tesla is exploring various raw materials, currently focusing on nickel for long-range electric cars and iron phosphate for shorter-range ones.

The executive suggests that manganese combined with nickel and iron could be a viable new battery solution, considering the need for millions of tons for large-scale production. Elon Musk is interested in manganese batteries due to their distinct advantages, primarily cost. This new battery is cheaper, without the need for expensive cobalt or nickel.

The global availability of manganese reduces production costs and supply chain risks. Additionally, performance is superior with greater power density and fast charging. The mixture of manganese with other metals such as nickel or lithium can further enhance energy density and battery range in terms of safety.

Manganese batteries stand out for having a lower risk of overheating, fire, or explosion. Manganese, being less toxic and corrosive than cobalt or nickel, ensures greater safety and durability in sustainability.

Manganese excels, being producible in a renewable manner, reducing dependence on non-renewable sources. It is also easier to recycle, lessening environmental impact and waste generation.

The new manganese battery promises to revolutionize the electric vehicle industry, as they enable more accessible, efficient, and eco-friendly models. These vehicles are crucial in the new global energy economy and in transforming car manufacturing.

However, challenges such as initial cost, high range, limited charging time, and charging infrastructure still hinder mass adoption of electric cars. Manganese batteries represent a significant advancement in the field of electric mobility, with their ability to lower costs and improve performance and convenience for electric cars.

They position themselves as a vital solution to current challenges. In addition, these batteries play a crucial role in accelerating the transition to a Low Carbon and Circular Economy, as they help reduce dependence on oil and cut greenhouse gas emissions, while minimizing waste generation in the transportation sector. This technology also opens new opportunities for industries such as renewable energy and battery recycling.

Elon Musk Is Not the Only One Interested in These Batteries

Manganese batteries are not new and have been used for decades in various applications such as electronic devices, power tools, and electric bicycles. However, their adoption in electric cars has been limited due to challenges like low high voltage, self-discharge, and reduced lifespan. The good news is that recent advancements in battery technology are overcoming these obstacles.

For example, Tesla, under Elon Musk, has been working on a new battery composition that includes 2/3 nickel and ⅓ manganese, potentially increasing the cell volume by 50%.

Tesla is not alone in this journey, as other automakers and battery manufacturers are also exploring the new manganese battery. Nissan, for instance, has been using a manganese-rich cathode in its Leaf battery since 2010.
