Mexican Businessman Cancels America Móvil Partnership With Elon Musk’s Starlink After Insinuations About Organized Crime, Causing Billion-Dollar Losses
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has entered yet another controversy and has suffered a significant financial loss. After insinuating that Carlos Slim, owner of Claro and one of the richest men in the world, had ties to organized crime in Mexico, the Mexican billionaire decided to retaliate. Slim ordered the immediate termination of the partnership between America Móvil and Starlink, directly impacting Musk’s plans to expand his satellite internet in Latin America.
The cancellation of the contract has caused billion-dollar losses for Starlink, which now needs to rethink its strategy to grow on the continent without the support of one of the largest telecommunications conglomerates in the region.
End of Partnership and Impact on Starlink
America Móvil used Starlink’s technology to provide internet connection in remote areas and optimize corporate telecommunications services. With Slim’s decision, all planned investments have been suspended, resulting in an estimated financial impact of R$ 40 billion for Elon Musk’s company.
The partnership between the companies was seen as strategic, especially for Starlink’s expansion into emerging markets. Without this support, Musk will have to seek new commercial partners in Latin America to prevent his operation in the region from being harmed.
Carlos Slim Announces Billion-Dollar Investment After Breaking With Elon Musk
Shortly after the breakup, Slim announced a US$ 22 billion plan to strengthen his telecommunications infrastructure over the next three years. The goal is to reduce reliance on external partners and consolidate America Móvil as the largest telecommunications company in Latin America.
The move represents a new challenge for Starlink, which loses an important distribution channel for its services and will need to restructure its operations in the region.
President of Mexico Criticizes Musk and Defends Slim
Elon Musk’s statements were not well received in Mexico. President Claudia Sheinbaum quickly took a stance, labeling the insinuations as unfounded and irresponsible. According to Sheinbaum, there is no investigation against Carlos Slim related to organized crime, and associating his fortune with drug trafficking is an “unfounded offense”.
She also emphasized that Slim is one of Mexico’s main investors and one of the key figures behind the growth of the country’s telecommunications infrastructure.
Competitors Eyeing the Space Left by Starlink
With Starlink’s exit from the partnership with America Móvil, other telecommunications giants are starting to move. Companies like Telefónica and Millicom are already exploring ways to expand their presence in Latin America, taking advantage of the space left by Elon Musk’s company.
In the meantime, Starlink is seeking alternatives to maintain its operations in the region, potentially negotiating agreements with smaller operators or even offering services directly to consumers.
